RPG Evolution: Game Cancelled, Now What?

There are no cancellations only rescheduling. My group doesn't have a regular schedule, there is no way we could all commit to a schedule. At the end of each game session we select a Saturday in the next month that works for all of us. When we started 10 years ago, I ran my campaign so that...

    How often do you play?

Once a month. An 8-hour game. I'd rather run one longer game than two shorter games. I would like to play more frequently but it is hard to regularly schedule a weekly or biweekly game, whereas we've been able to find one Saturday a month to play for the last 10 years.

WotC Mike Mearls: "D&D Is Uncool Again"

Well, while I enjoy playing all kinds of TTRPGs, and do not look down on my friends who got really into VtM TTRPGs and LARP, I have to say Zardnaar's comment got a LOL from me. Those who remember the pretension in some VtM communities in the early '90s get it. I just read Z's comment as similar...

WotC Mike Mearls: "D&D Is Uncool Again"

Glad to hear it! I mean, I love good science fiction, but I'm very picky with sci fi when it comes to books (not so much for TV & film), but I'll happily enjoy even "bad" fantasy pulp.

What VTT(s) do you most dislike and why? (Defenders welcome to defend)

This may be a strange topic, but I like discussing VTTs and have participated in a number of threads asking for VTT recommendations or about what VTTs folks are currently using. I've used a lot of VTTs over the years and I realize that there are none that I can say I "hate" and even none that I...

    What's your VTT of choice?

Foundry's support for different dice rolling processes is pretty darn extensive. If you are so inclined, I would be interested if you could provide a few examples of the more idiosyncratic dice-rolling processes. I'd be interesting in seeing if I can make it work only using dice formulae typed...

    What's your VTT of choice?

Kinda. But no. Without a single mod installed, Foundry is by far offers the best battlemap prep experience of any VTT I've tried, and I've put a lot of hours in to all the major VTTs and many of the less popular ones. Next, it depends on the game system. Pathfinder 2e and WFRP4e offer very well...

    What's your VTT of choice?

Exactly this. But I have a dream. A dream that one day I'll have a VTT where I can select a large group of tokens and reliably apply area effects and have persistent effects smoothly tracked. If the wotc VTT handles this well, that would be enough for me to switch to it for D&D games.

    What's your VTT of choice?

Yeah, but mod management and troubleshooting is one of the biggest frustrations less-techie folk encounter when diving into Foundry. Don't get me wrong, I love how much you can mod Foundry and love the mod community the grew around foundry. But for new people, I always recommend using it without...

    What's your VTT of choice?

Another good question would be: did you play Skyrim? Yes, okay, did you mod it until you had a character who could fly, travel around with a gang of NPCs, had an airship stronghold, and used console commands? No. You just played the game? I'm not sure Foundry is for you. ;-) That said, I...

    What's your VTT of choice?

I've never found Foundry core to be unstable, but conflicting or outdated mods can certainly create a lot of issues. The modability of Foundry is both a blessing and a curse.

    What's your VTT of choice?

It has also be years since I've used it. But even with the feature set it had when I was using it, it would still be more than functional to run an in-person game.

WotC Mike Mearls: "D&D Is Uncool Again"

Yep. A lot of people enjoy playing the game, but don't have much interest in it as a lifestyle hobby and are not spending much time on social media discussing it.

WotC Mike Mearls: "D&D Is Uncool Again"

Welcome and thanks for posting. Yep, Tolkien, Vance, Lovecraft, Howard...they all evoke recognition, nostalgia, and positive feelings do to well-worn neural pathways. The popularity of fantasy also feels much more cyclical than other genres. It seems there is always one or more popular sci fi...

Worlds of Design: A Pretty High Price

It seems to me that part of it is that a there is a segment of the hobby that like collecting and enjoying looking and reading through games without a clear intention of ever playing them. Great art and premium covers are important for those looking to collect TTRPGs. I have a bit of that in me...

How the Monsters Have Changed in the 2025 Monster Manual: Ankheg

Yeah, I understand that, but I would rather they up its AC and still have a lower AC when prone. Weaknesses like these remain fun even when the players/PCs know the weakness because it makes them approach the combat differently. I like mechanical weakness that are more than damage resistance and...

Jeremy Crawford Interview: The Monster Manual and More

For me it seems like more of a modern D&D thing to NOT kill gods. It was certainly a thing in AD&D (1e) when I played in the 80s. Although, maybe it is more of an age thing. Teenage me loved the gonzo. Old man me is much more into the zero and hero and I like games closer to the zero end.

    Should Wizardry Require Player Intelligence?

Gronk: I RAGE! DM: Ah, so you wish to rage—but tell me, why? What buried childhood trauma has shaped this volcanic fury within you? Is it the echoes of an absent father’s disapproval, the sting of childhood mockery, or the gnawing void of unmet affection? Your anger is not mere mechanics; it is...

    What's your VTT of choice?

Another reason I like The Forge for hosting my Foundry license. The auto and manual backups and snapshots are a life saver. I've never had any data loss issues, but I've certainly messed things up by messing around with community modules and settings, upgrading to a new version of Foundry...
