Most random encounters feel like a slog to me. Here's a link to 100 random encounters that mostly include roleplay that I would find fun. 100 Encounters on the Road Unless a random monster is known to hoard treasure then I doubt a party would pursue it.

In books and film they often cut to a different scene at a cliff hanger moment to increase drama, not stomp on it. It would also give a player like me a chance to reflect on the scene and plan my reaction. So I'm in favor of the cut scene when my DM uses it.

Send him on a quest that he will hate like Jonah had to do. Does he have a racial animosity like orcs or giants? Send him on a mission to proselytize them in a far away land to his religion.
