D&D General Skill challenges: action resolution that centres the fiction

I am very careful when i say railroad, but this unironically is 4E style skill challenges quite literally punish any other forms of engaging with the challenge, to get the players to do the specific skills they want you to do a certain amount of time to get a specific outcome separate from what...

D&D General Skill challenges: action resolution that centres the fiction

In your own post, you have shown the issue with the fiction in question, which is you have made a very specific set of inputs to get a specific output separate from the actual thing you're describing itself but focus on how the players with resolve X thing. This is terrible, because players can...

I mean they have that with Fighter and Barbarian already tbh

D&D 5E (2014) Battlemaster and Superiority Dice are causing martials to suffer.

Tbh, this is always something people forget when talking about "battlemaster/resources should be for everything" That WoTC did not make this decision arbitrarily to remove maneuvers from everything, it was something that was communicated to them by a large feedback in the biggest DnD...

D&D General Skill challenges: action resolution that centres the fiction

I think the issue is with my point, is people dont quite understand how ridiculous and unintuitive skill challenges actually are and what they do in 4e actually is. Simply comparing this very the actual extended skill checks/progress clocks people here are talking about, makes it a lot clearer...

D&D General Skill challenges: action resolution that centres the fiction

both of those things actually represent something that describes or is meant to represent the scenario in question, as a description, separate from the actions the players are supposed to take to engage with it. 4E skill challenges are meant and designed to be engaged in a very specific way, a...

D&D 5E (2014) Battlemaster and Superiority Dice are causing martials to suffer.

The only way Champions crits can really be competitive with battle master is if you give them an On-Hit weapon or ability, like a Flametougue or a Frost Brand.

D&D General Skill challenges: action resolution that centres the fiction

Oh no Progress Clocks and such from blade in the dark are good, but those are pretty different from skill challenges, as they are used and resolved in a much different way, seperate from focusing on action resolution and more of a measure of something, usually time,, that is a smarter way of...

    D&D 5E (2014) Common house rules for 5e.

them getting advantage on navigation is actually as intended, as thats what having a map actually gives RAW from memory. And Outlanders foraging thing only matters in areas where the DC is so low as written it is not a issue.

D&D General Skill challenges: action resolution that centres the fiction

That is a problem solved for a long time, which is just using mechanics to describe the problems at hand, its what statblocks have been used for, and are still used for. Using mechanics to detail problems seperate from the actions/resolution of it, leads to having a toolbox to manage problems...

D&D 5E (2014) Battlemaster and Superiority Dice are causing martials to suffer.

The idea i suggested was expanding them on the "Special Attack" options like Grapple and Shove, where you can trade out attacks to do these things, this kinda makes fighters innately the best at them, because they can simply do it the most, because they have the most attacks, on top of Action Surge.

D&D General Skill challenges: action resolution that centres the fiction

"That strength is that skill challenges centre the fiction in the process of action declaration and resolution." If you're designing your challenges around what your players might do, you're just setting yourself up for wasted prep, or railroads. This is such awful design, its always easier to...

D&D 5E (2014) Battlemaster and Superiority Dice are causing martials to suffer.

But they can't honestly, Grapple and shove sure, but not everything else, like taunts, Parries, frightens, among other things, when within reason they should be able to do these things.

D&D 5E (2014) Battlemaster and Superiority Dice are causing martials to suffer.

That was a solution i said in my OP. I think the "Special Attack" thing that Grapple and Shove have going on is a design space that can be expanded, in a unique scalable way for martials better than tying them to arbitrary resources

No Time is spent via actions, what im spending is some weird dice called superiority dice.

D&D 5E (2014) Battlemaster and Superiority Dice are causing martials to suffer.

People usually see battlemaster and its maneuver system as a cure for the issue of the martial caster gap, and i can understand why, martial have a terrible issue of a lack of options, and battlemaster gives resources and options, which make the class feel far more dynamic and interesting. But...
