    Daggerheart General Thread [+]

Given that DH has no initiative, and only on PC fear rolls or fear spends can spotlights happen to have the adversaries act, it's pretty straightforward to handle it. My gut instinct is to put it at "If the PC has acted twice without fear, interrupt for a spotlight"

It's worth noting as well that the final fight's baddies are in two flavors, decidedly not equal threat (and called out by the tags on them: Bruisers vs Standards, both tier 1) and the area pops in more standards, not more bruisers. My players ran the clock down mowing the standards. Neither...

What other fantasy games are out there?

So going through my hard drive... Jackals: bronze age fantasy, set in a close analogue to the middle east, using a d100 based system, with both a system of awarded automatic advancements, and use-to-raise check rolls. No non-humans as PCs. Magic is linked to the culture of the caster. Several...

What other fantasy games are out there?

Pendragon has NPC dwarfs, but they're humans with growth dysfunction, and not available as PCs Elves in Pendragon are classic medieval elves, not the Tolkienian nor Victorian-Georgian ones. Forces of magic and destruction. And not available as PCs.

What other fantasy games are out there?

There are a few dozen as NPCs, none corresponding to Tolkienian Dwarves nor to Elves. The most common being the bakemono (goblins) and trolls. L5R 1 and 2 had way of the Clans books including two non-humans as playables: The Naga (snake people) and the Nezumi (Ratmen) I seem to recall there...

    Most influential RPG

It had a one season TV show of its own, and it created a ready demographic to convince Fox there was an audience for a revised BTVS... It also was popular enough to draw the ire of BADD and several other anti-RPG groups... It may not have been important where you were, but it was definitely a...

Keep in mind the labels go Minor < Major < Severe, and that's 1/2/3 HP. No PC can be killed in a single shot, as starting HP range from 5 (Bard, Wizard) to 7 (Guardian, Seraph). So, at worst, at level 1, everyone but Guardian and Seraph can be put down by 2 max strength hits. Hit points aren't...

    Daggerheart General Thread [+]

I just (ending 3.5 hours ago) ran my second session. We played VOIP, TOTM last night. I'm using the 3 actions per round option (corebook, p 89, left column, callout box "spotlight tracker") The flow of the fights is largely me asking, "So, who's next?" with players self policing on 3 spotlights...

Do you remember your first RPG purchase?

I figure most people's first game GMd is suboptimal. It was for both my offspring. It was for me. It was for most of the others i've been a player for in their first game GMd.

Which RPG has the best combat rules for flying vehicles?

GURPS has more math in character gen than about 90% of the hundreds of systems I own. But it's simple math for the most part. The more math games include CORPS, Rolemaster and Champions, Web of Stars, Space Opera... But GURPS itself wasnt the cause for the comment... GURPS Vehicles is much...

    Worlds of Design: Playing Favorites

One other thought on the number of plays... Amongst non-D&D-only players, most have several unplayed systems. I'm at the far end of that....

    Worlds of Design: Playing Favorites

Considering quite a few people log ownership but not plays, and admit it when QOTDs ask, the play count stats are pretty meaningless. I've not logged plays in years. My RPG sessions don't even get logged in the log system...

    Best wuxia RPG?

It's a rules issue mirroring the genre issue. Not as profound, but Feng Shui 2 gives a bonus for colorful descriptions, too... And it's an option in a lot of storygames to give bonuses for colorful narrations. It's the kind of "enforcing the genre" rule I tend to like, but I do realize the PITA...

Which RPG has the best combat rules for flying vehicles?

And enough math to scare many accountants. (CORPS VDS is only slightly better. And it's use cases are easier, too... but CORPS 2e (red hexagon cover) is conceptually harder for people than GURPS.)

    Best wuxia RPG?

That's as much a factor of the whole Wuxia genre... ... the heroes have a quick retort to everything in the Wuxia I've watched. Much of the same for the chanbara genre... Oriental films seem to be fights as time to break out both the social and physical combat rules and give every major...

    The EN World Selfie Thread

I like the hemp twine ones. Especially since the one I had was saturated with glue, and so was durably rigid and didn't soak water... last I saw it, my eldest had decided it was hers... I was out of state at the time.

    Worlds of Design: Playing Favorites

I tend to be a neophile, too, but certain games have lasting appeal. For me, WEG D6 Star Wars, Pendragon 4th, Starships and Spacemen, and LUG-Trek. Newer systems in that space include Sentinel Comics, and likely, Daggerheart. Certain settings, as well, call to me: Mekton Empire, Twilight 2000...

Do you remember your first RPG purchase?

My mother was worried as well, until my 8th grade year (fall 82)... see, one of the guys got me Q1... so we played it that afternoon. Mom thought she was hidden on the stairs, but she heard us fighting demons and exploring, and was suddenly less uptight about it. She still doesn't see the...
