Yea. I think the keyword there is 'in that moment'. Though I do think it's interesting that it still occurs for the DM.

Okay. Why would someone play for advancement vs not? I'm asking whether you can even evaluate whether one will generally be more successful at whatever challenges the game puts in your way. My impression is that the answer is most likely no. 1. The challenges change depending on your...

I think the dependence/indepedence of the roll and the quantumness of it are 2 separate things.

I was struggling to follow your reasoning on why quantum and why not earlier but this makes more sense. It's that you are viewing the scene from the players perspective. Essentially players in D&D don't encounter any player facing quantum resolution mechanics in their play and so from their...

Was it quantum before it was preestablished?

Can one not mechanically optimize characters in the 'typical games using fail forward'?

I see. The basic premise being that if it's instantiated early enough then you can adequately account for it in relation to the players actions?

I've been thinking and this seems like a good springboard. Why is a Random Table to determine the Cook's presence not quantum? Say 1-20 the cook is there and 21-100 no one is there. Why isn't this a quantum scenario? I don't think it is either, but curious on where you see the differences.

Thanks for engaging with the example.

It seems exactly like that kind of case to me? I get the cook wasn't introduced at the same moment the hard move occurs, but making the process into 2 steps by first introducing the cook and then a hard move with the cook doesn't actually solve the issue I'm describing - though it does make for...

D&D 5E (2014) Battlemaster and Superiority Dice are causing martials to suffer.

There's some really straightforward masteries like graze or cleave. So IMO, it's still possible to do simple, and never really was optimal to do so.

And I'm positing that optimal play from a game perspective would be to use Discern Realities as little as possible. Now maybe it's that there are cases where invoking that move more often can actually increase your chances for success, but it's certainly not clear why that would be the case...

I think the stakes are rarely clear due to downstream effects of any decision and die roll. I get that. Some of us view soft moves into hard moves as doing exactly this.

You're the expert. Why the heck would you need to run the game to talk about such a scenario?

Providing a list of reasons the player may do something, doesn't answer a question about the game incentive for doing it. Not all reasons a player does something are based on game incentives and that's fine, but my question is specifically about the game incentives in the context of a specific...

So you can tell us we did it wrong the moment what we do deviates from what you do? This isn't just idle speculation, it's happened before, so Nah. You're the resident expert here on those games and I trust you know exactly how the mechanics work. But you're not the expert on interpreting...

Overall I like this post. Let me try to bring up a few of the things people just aren't getting. 1. I think there is some misunderstanding about what you mean by implicit. For us, the idea of kitchen in the house is implicit and that attempting to break into the house at an unspecified time...

    D&D 5E (2024) What's the best way to build a bladelock now?

I guess I should add, the single level fighter dip i think is ideal for a melee warlock, but you can definitely delay it till after level 5. Fiendish Vigor and Armor of Agathys should be plenty to carry you through early levels.
