D&D 5E (2024) Just realized Sentinel is heavily nerfed! No longer works with PAM, no longer works on most enemies who Disengage.

That's fair. I would consider all of those things to be extremely rare for enemies. But sure, if they have them that is correct. It didn't work that way in 2014 either. As an example: An enemy is 15ft away. You have a reach weapon and sentinel. The enemy disengages and moves such that he...

    D&D 5E (2024) What's the best way to build a bladelock now?

Random thoughts. My ideal 2024 Warlock is just straight EB + Control/Summon spells. At level 4 take Spell Sniper so I can fire it into melee. An early game Melee Warlock with Armor of Agathys and the False life at will invocation will be a beast. 12 Temp hp that you can replenish at any time...

It never did. I just checked 2014 rules and the 5ft requirement for OA's on a Disengage action is there as well. I don't know that anyone ever actually played it that way though? The within 5ft of you was in my 2014 PHB. So apparently that part never worked with reach weapons. (y) You are...

IMO. What would be more helpful would be an example of breaking into the house and what would be the minimum requirements to narrate the cook screaming for help.

Looks to me like he’s citing a scenario. What the heck does it matter where the hypothetical scenario is from?

Right, it hinges on the explanation, not the authority.

But that’s not my claim. Maybe ask me about my belief instead of making silly assumptions about it?

How the heck is this getting twisted into me saying anything about how Burning wheel should be played?

Nope not going to happen. We weren’t talking specifically about Burning Wheel despite you bringing into the conversation as an example at an earlier point.

Shouldn’t there be some kind of roll to detect the guards? Or is that not how DW works?

I realized the irony about halfway through, but just like in d&d retreat is never a good option ;)

D&D 5E (2024) Just realized Sentinel is heavily nerfed! No longer works with PAM, no longer works on most enemies who Disengage.

The disengage issue doesn’t even need a rule change. Just never have an enemy move 5ft away and then disengage. By and large I feel Sentinel and PAM were both buffed independently due to being able to combine them with super high accuracy and weapon masteries like push or topple. It’s just...

You are so mistaken here I don’t think I will be able to unpack it for you. Appeal to authority isn’t when a non-authority in a particular field makes a claim, it’s when an authority in that field makes a claim. Look it up. By all means validate my claim independently, I don’t want you to take...

In the real world people take substantial risks to their life for money all the time. Oftentimes they also choose leisure time activities that are a lot more dangerous than necessary as well. So yes, I can imagine all that from the real world.

Most everything bad that happens in an RPG is random crap coming about due to die rolls. Thus, I think it’s something more than randomness that’s the underlying issue here. I’d also suggest that if character death wasn’t high stakes that it’s hard to make sense of why something low stakes...

Right. It’s not so much that experts aren’t useful. It’s that experts can be wrong. Which is why appeal to authority is a fallacy in the first place - being an expert/authority doesn’t mean you are correct. The second issue is, who decides what makes a person an expert/authority?
