If I had to sum up what I’ve learned this thread it would be that the causality I’m worried about isn’t the fictional causality but rather the simulation causality. Which presupposes a simulation to begin with. It’s that underlying assumption of simulation vs no simulation that makes...

I prefer not to ;) I mean is Orc poo green? Gnome poo pink? Does tiefling poo smell like fire and sulpher?

Training the model can be transformative while specific users using the model to produce a copyrighted work could be viewed as infringing. That’s the line I expect to be drawn.

You know. I’m not sure what you are talking about either.

So you fully recognize the there’s a difference by virtue of ‘not all narrativist games have this feature’. Prior you proceeded to make me jump through hoops to explain that a difference existed, none of my explanations even sufficed, leading me to believe you thought there was no difference at...

From my perspective I cannot think of a single example that would render who was in the mask as mere color. Certainly none of your suggestions come close to that for me. And even more so as to why they were in it, if it is cursed or worn purposeful is also even further beyond mere color from...

Maybe it’s not a good idea to attack games others like as incoherent or less coherent?

On the runes, I’m thankful for the example because it’s the clearest example yet of exactly what we claim is happening in narrativist games actually occurring. 100x better than the old Evards Black Tower example which always gets muddled in the ‘memory’ side discussion. Addressing the ‘it’s...

Well, it’s not a mistaken idea even if it’s ‘not real’. I say that a player can restrict their narrations on any basis, and indeed to have anything other than ‘pass the conch’ they must do so. If that basis (or 1 of many basis) is on treating the world as real and independent of the character...

And I’m saying it’s not a no true scottsman because there is a simple deciding line that differentiates the true scottsmen. To do this 1 of 2 criteria must be met 1) the thing being narrated must be below the level of abstraction, making it mere color to introduce its existence after the...

I’m not sure what you mean here. I think I’m pointing out that the specifics of the example can place the crumbling rocks either above or below the level of abstraction? Depending on the specific details the defense is either, ‘it’s color’ or ‘the crumbling rocks were already established’.

Sure, but in that case he probably isn’t having you fall on a failed athletics check either.

On the crumbling rocks… Consider what’s been established. The pc is climbing a rocky cliff. A failed climb check need not mean you fall off the cliff. So I’m already a bit puzzled with why the result of the failed check is falling. Now suppose we had fictionally established the detail that...

Why is it unhelpful and confusing to analyze play from the perspective of an independently real world?

In our playstyle it would be against our unwritten (see social contract) play principles for the DM to just arbitrarily decide such details. He should be basing them on the already established fiction.
