D&D 5E (2014) What are your biggest immersion breakers, rules wise?

Your virtue and sincerity are absolutely unimpeachable. Well done, you!

D&D 5E (2014) What are your biggest immersion breakers, rules wise?

You read a post you largely agree with more charitably than someone who disagrees with the content of that post? You don’t say!

D&D 5E (2014) What are your biggest immersion breakers, rules wise?

But there are limits to that, as has been discussed at length earlier in this thread (e.g. how to narrate getting reduced to 0 hp by lava). So it’s not really always within your power, is it?

D&D 5E (2014) What are your biggest immersion breakers, rules wise?

I don’t think it’s off the table. I think it works better in certain instances than in others and for certain people better than for others. I don’t think anyone is saying you shouldn’t imagine things differently. I think there’s just a bit of push back against people who seem to be saying that...

D&D 5E (2014) What are your biggest immersion breakers, rules wise?

As a veteran hair-splitter myself, I applaud your efforts! Truly exceptional craftsmanship. However, I can’t help but wonder if you’re missing the forest for the trees.

D&D 5E (2014) What are your biggest immersion breakers, rules wise?

You’ve been exceptionally patient and explained yourself extremely well. Let’s face it: they’re just not going to give you the satisfaction of acknowledging your point (which I happen to think is a very sound one). They’re too invested in their own point of view. Best to just let it go and not...

D&D 5E (2014) What are your biggest immersion breakers, rules wise?

Totally, and to be honest that's often how I wind up doing it. I would file narrating a blow in this manner under "leaving things vague" which IMO is a sensible but tedious solution to the problem.

D&D 5E (2014) What are your biggest immersion breakers, rules wise?

Right, I get that, but you're still kind of dancing around the point. They get hit with a spear thrust. It's a serious blow. They're prone, unconscious, at 0 hp, making death saves. Obviously describing them as decapitated, impaled, gutted or anything similar would be inappropriate: they're not...

D&D 5E (2014) What are your biggest immersion breakers, rules wise?

I get what you're saying, but perfect narration for being reduced to 0 hp is essentially impossible, which was sort of my point. Take the mine shaft example (which incidentally I don't think is at all outlandish—abandoned mines and pit traps are two D&D staples). How are we supposed to know if...

D&D 5E (2014) What are your biggest immersion breakers, rules wise?

Replace "fall down a mine shaft" with "get stomped by an ogre" or "run through with a spear" or "incinerated by a gout of lava". It really doesn't matter. Here's a quick recap: Clever listed his beef with fast HP recovery; you decided to criticize his comment with "but HP aren't meat points...

D&D 5E (2014) What are your biggest immersion breakers, rules wise?

Yes so. I understand the hair you're splitting—that technically you need to regain a hit point by external means first—but I really don't see what difference that makes. Imagine this: you fall down a mine shaft, taking 20d6 damage. You're reduced to 0 hp. Mercifully, you succeed on 3 deaths...

    D&D 5E (2014) Improving Two-Weapon Fighting

I disagree. I think it's a reasonable choice for a character that isn't focussed on DPR. It's one of the only ways to get a boost to your AC with almost no strings attached. It might be less immediately appealing than the damage boosting styles, but it has its niche. I've seen a few people take...

D&D 5E (2014) What are your biggest immersion breakers, rules wise?

PCs who have been reduced to 0 HP—i.e. PCs who have taken "a potentially life threatening wound"—also recover all their hit points after 8 hours of rest, so Clever's objection stands even if we accept your reframing of the issue. Personally, I don't have a problem with the...

    D&D 5E (2014) Improving Two-Weapon Fighting

The +1 AC from defense style also comes at the expense of damage output because you chose defense style instead of something else. Characterizing added flexibility as a disadvantage isn't a very convincing argument.

Significantly better than defense style even if used only for +AC. Seems a little problematic, no?

And did you notice that: 1) this thread is more than 7 years old, and 2) it appears to be incorrectly sorted into the Pathfinder/Starfinder forum? EDIT: previously, it was in the Pathfinder forum. It appears to have subsequently been re-sorted into the correct forum by a mod.

D&D 5E (2014) Why are vehicle speeds so slow in the DMG?

It's true. The research I've done suggests that oldschool rowboats could be rowed at a speed of 2mph over long distances. Oldschool sailing ships could easily average 7 mph on a long journey. Not sure what the DMG numbers are based on.
