Well you can play without mini's.. but you just have to describe how far everything is from eachother, otherwise you imagination is youre own limit..

You dont need line of sight to hold an hand on youre chest and cast the light spell.. being blinded doesnt make you handicapped.. If someone can refer to an page where it says that darkness ignores all light sources, that no light source can ever surpass darkness..

but you dont need line of sight to have line of effect so an wizard can always cast light on hisself.. and if he does that, does the light overcome the darkness and makes the characters not blinded?
