    D&D 3.x 3.5 Weapon question

That's right Elvenshae. Quit trying to one-up me with your valuable contributions! (Yes, I get that it wasn't intended at us...)

    Role/Roll Playing

To follow up on my last post, if we presume that stats don't impact the game from 8 to 13 (based on 2e CON) that means that on 3d6 only 33% of characters would roll a stat that had an impact on play. In 3e and beyond, 75% of characters would roll a stat that had an impact on play. It is...

Weapon training provides power instead of access

I really like the idea of having abilities unlocked by feats and it is something I'll have to give more thought towards. All good input. Cutting (or exploding) actually scale really well such that the damage is about equal regardless of the die. My post a few lines up demonstrates this; the...

    D&D 3.x 3.5 Weapon question

Looks great and helpful. My one criticism is that the "box of believability" seems a bit constrained. With strength, magic, spec, and power attack, a bonus above +12 seems pretty doable particularly if it is two-handed power attack. Either way, adds more to the base of understanding. Good additions.

Take a stand! LotR vs. GoT

You have no choice. Place your stake in a camp. The comments are the place for nuance and dissent and we look forward to both!

    D&D 3.x 3.5 Weapon question

Be sure to check out the newest version above. Much more accurate with the input of Patryn of Elvenshae.

    Role/Roll Playing

I see this line of argument a lot, but no one ever seems to mention that CON didn't kick in with regards to HP until 7 (-1) or 14 (+1). That same range is -2 or +2 in 3e and beyond. So while older editions were "harsher" with regards to generating stats, they also made stats less important. You...

    Magical items for children?

How about a Rod of Dissuasion that makes someone give up a point of view. Say it automatically turns an attitude from Unfriendly to Indifferent x/day so if an NPC catches him doing something relatively naughty they'll give him a slap on the wrist instead of something more serious. But getting...

    D&D 3.x 3.5 Weapon question

Fear not, I did it not for the xp but for the lulz. Edit--xcel updated to account for an equal distribution of crit confirmations.

    Condensing forums

All good points. Just looking at the 4e house rules forum, though, and the most recent posts on the first page span 3 weeks and only 8 threads have received posts in the last 48 hours. It just makes the journey to the forum less worthwhile and makes me wonder if those threads wouldn't get more...

    D&D 3.x 3.5 Weapon question

I think this is accurate and removes non-crit damage during non-threats. The changes are actually more dramatic than I assumed and probably towards where Elvenshae was intonating. It still is off a bit because it basically presumes a threat is a crit, but I'll plug away on that too.

You're right; I see my error now. [Edit--follow up posts summarizes it better]

    Flattening & Simplifying Defences

I think that is what they did, you are just interpreting it differently. Mental attacks "hit" and we see if they are effective based on Will. Other things, like frigid cold, also "hit" and we see if you can endure them with Fortitude. Most things, however, are resolved by Reflex or its...

    Condensing forums

I am thinking specifically about the 4e house rules and 4e general forum. The 4e house rules forum will routinely have an hour between posts. What benefit does separating the forums provide that prefixes could not more easily provide without forcing people to tab between forums? I'm not sure if...

    D&D 3.x 3.5 Weapon question

Well, it does discount critical damage to account for the fact that you must confirm a critical, but you are correct that there is an issue in scenarios where an 18 wouldn't hit but would threat. Fortunately, these are such fringe scenarios that they account for hundredths of a point of...

    D&D 3.x 3.5 Weapon question

Absolutely true with the one caveat being that it still depends on damage bonus. Now, seeing as your statement becomes true when the damage bonus reaches +4, it is probably safe to just say you are correct. But this also shouldn't be surprising, the scimitar is 50% better at critical hits and if...

    D&D 3.x 3.5 Weapon question

Not to derail the lively discussion, but I put together a spreadsheet that highlights the tradeoff. The damage variance is a function of the to hit ratio (and crit confirm) as well as the bonus to damage that is multiplied. You can adjust the crit range at the top of the "Comparison" tab to see...

    Raven Crowking's Nest

I agree in principle but I think it is harder in execution. As my group got older, we had less and less time and so we had to focus on what added the most fun to the game. For a lot of groups, I bet that is feeling genuinely immersed in a vibrant world. For us, the vibrancy had diminishing...

Why is EN World so slow?

Any updates on the speed issues? We're about 5+ weeks past the upgrade and I still get modest lags on any page change. I checked Alexa and it has enworld around the 40th percentile for speed whereas giantitp is around 75th percentile (and I believe handles a larger volume of posts). I get that...
