THE REAL THING Is An Official RPG Based On 80s Band Faith No More

Well hot damn. Really considering this one.

RPG Evolution: For Those Who Support Us

Thanks for this and my condolences to you on your loss. This resonated with me. The MM was my first book, bought for me by my father when I was likely 7, because I loved monsters and begged him to get it for me, despite his warning that "It wasnt the kind of book I was thinking of." And thank...

    D&D 5E (2014) Group skill checks

It's my experience that if I require all the party to succeed in a stealth check to employ stealth as a group, then they will never bother. When I have used this method, PC default into just walking in and fighting their way through everything. Imagine if to win a combat encounter, all members...

    D&D 5E (2014) Group skill checks

So, according to the PHB, when a group skill check happens, if at least half the characters involved succeed, the group succeeds. Where I would expect this to come up most often is Stealth checks when moving as a group. Success would be overcoming the passive Perceptions of any possible foes. My...

Looking for Guardians of the Galaxy type system recommendations.

Fate is pretty flexable. The setting is very tongue in cheek. Doesn't have mystical elements to my knowledge, unlike Scum and Villainy.

    D&D 5E (2014) Human Standard vs Variant

Given the changes to races we are already seeing, I am expecting Humans to also see changes when we get the revised edition in a few years, if not sooner. But I am kinda curious. I can't see the point in not playing the variant human when it is an option. Standard human is just so incredibly...

Dragonlance DRAGONLANCE LIVES! Unearthed Arcana Explores Heroes of Krynn!

Based on a discussion with a friend, I don't want a setting book. Instead, a 5e version of the War of the Lance as a mega adventure storyline.

D&D General How has D&D changed over the decades?

My condolences on your friend's experience. It highlights that both players and DMs need to come together in collaboration when shaping a new campaign. I would argue that a DM who is inflexible in their vision for a campaign to any player designs is just as at fault for a game failing to...

D&D General How has D&D changed over the decades?

On reflection, a big change from when I started to now is the nature of the "fail state" of the game. If you played RAW, earlier editions of the game were much more punishing. Looking at mechanics like Save or Die effects and Level Drain, you could very readily mechanically lose the game. The...

D&D General How has D&D changed over the decades?

I jumped in with 1st ed AD&D. Visually, the quality of layout and production values and how they have improved is one of the most striking for me. Looking back, the DMG felt like trying to read a Phone Book in comparison to today's products.

Anything you miss from older monster manual stat blocks?

If not individual morale entries, then at least a good discussion about morale in the DMG, along with making Intimidate worth a damn please.

D&D General What’s The Big Deal About Psionics?

Honestly, I enjoy Psionics when they are an alternate magic system. There is a long history of them being extra cheese on top of an existing character due to wild talents. So they will always be a mixed bag in terms of how they impact the game. However, not every game I run can support them...

D&D 5E (2014) Great Weapon Master: how about -5 AC instead of -5 to hit?

As I stated earlier, while the conventional wisdom is that Advantage is as if one gets a +5 to hit, it is not in fact a to hit bonus. If an effect grants advantage, all other sources of advantage are ignored. My point was if an attacker ALSO had advantage, the effects would stack after a sense...

D&D General Is there a D&D setting that actually works how it would with access to D&D magic?

It all depends on how you view magical ability. Is magical ability knowledge or is magical ability power? If it is knowledge, as in, anyone who has an opportunity to learn it can use it to some degree, like math, then yeah, it would naturally proliferate to some degree over a large enough...

D&D 5E (2014) Great Weapon Master: how about -5 AC instead of -5 to hit?

Just keep in mind that a -5 to AC is much more punishing than an attacker having advantage, due to the fact that they can then get advantage from another source, while multiple cases of gaining advantage do nothing, and a single thing granting disadvantage negates all advantage.

D&D 5E (2014) Great Weapon Master: how about -5 AC instead of -5 to hit?

Both questions are answered together. I mean the next attack the feat user is subject to. As in, the next time they are attacked, they are at -5 AC. I would also likely rule that using this feat multiple times in a turn would result in "stacks." So if the character had 3 attacks and used this...

D&D 5E (2014) Great Weapon Master: how about -5 AC instead of -5 to hit?

How long would it last? Next attack? That could be a reasonable trade. An entire round? One would be foolish to take it.
