    Evolution of the Fighter

Oh, FFS, set it up so the rogue has to use his expert skills on something while the fighter with his cross-class skill or two has to use that skill on something else. Voila, no house rules. Or maybe the cross-class skill covers something the rogue didn't dump a billion skill points in. Everyone...

    Evolution of the Fighter

You don't have to have all checks scale up all the time for everything the party encounters. There isn't necessarily a reason for it, and followed uniformly, it's as contrived as customizing every single encounter to fit exactly with the party's capabilities. That said my fighter house rule is...

    Cynicism of an AD&D refugee

Even accounting for the endlessly-harped upon invalid options, there are still more character options in core 3e, simply because the multiclassing system generated so many variants. Saying otherwise is like blabbering to me that the sun is in fact the moon; it's one of those things that...

    Dragonomicon: Dracolich Mongrel

Here are my problems – and my issue is not that the content is "wrong" somehow, but that it's insubstantial: - items one and six are redundant - items three and four are traits common to most all undead; if you're taking an approach that relies on the DM bringing outside knowledge or...

3.x ed.--While Playing My 15th Level Wizard Last Night, I Realized Something...

I agree – when simming things in 3e games, I don't have NPCs go past 5th level unless they've survived some pretty extraordinary events. And those are the ones that work and work and work and even achieve breakthroughs in their areas of expertise. Peaceful lives have a low Challenge Rating. :p

    Disappointed in 4e

In a game where I could theoretically see the faces of all the combatants on the field, I'm happier with keeping morale mostly out of hit points, which is how it's been done previously, simply because I want anything with zero hit points to have sustained a mortal wound. I prefer the game to be...

    Dragonomicon: Dracolich Mongrel

Can, or can't? I totally can't tell if this is a typo or not. So, why even have the phylactery, and status as a "lich", at all? What does it get you? I can't see that it serves any function at all, except as a description of the creature's anatomy, much like shooting zombies in the brain to...

    Dragonomicon: Dracolich Mongrel

Yeah, the spontaneous-undead angle is the most interesting take on this thing, which, as presented, is basically angry-dead-thing-wants-to-kill you. The lich angle is uncompelling, mostly because a) what is the point really of having a phylactery if it's embedded in the creature, nope, you gotta...

What class are you least likely to play in 4e?

I'll say this for old school feel: clerics haven't looked this boring since 1st edition.

    Disappointed in 4e

This is all quite clever, but (putting on the company's shoes) you'd probably want to do a bit of both. Like, add 10 levels and two classes per installment. Because people want to try new things, too. Basically, it's the model CRPGS use for their expansions... because it works. I dunno exactly...

Vampires, Pop Culture, and Your Game

Honestly I've never liked having vampires in D&D games. It's probably residual repulsion towards level drains... I think if you made me put them in a setting, I'd make them into the ruling class of a distant, ancient, horrible empire, and keep their nature a secret for a while.

    Do non-spellcasting, non-adventuring priests exist in D&D?

Back when I played Basic / AD&D, I don't think we ever absorbed the idea that priests would not be cleric-class characters, whether that was laid out in the books or not. There were the clerics, who could do cleric spells, and the followers, who were whatever. The way I conceive of it now, not...

Top 3 positive 4E changes-Forked Thread: ...specific changes 4e needs in your opinion

I'd go with: 1) monster generation (which mostly subsumes the reduction of DM prep time) 2) the new less swingy mathematical model, generally 3) the ironing out of the tiers of power as the things that most strongly appeal to me about the new edition. The first one especially is a very...

1E and 4E are similar? Really? (Forked from: 1E Resurgence?)

I still have almost all of 'em from that set. Including the d20. Which has always worked pretty well. (I did ditch the d6s though.)

    Build around Jumping

That's great, now I have an image of Caesar bunny-hopping FPS-style at the head of his armies as they advance on the Gallic hordes. Thank you, thank you very much.

The Half-Level Bonus - Angel or Devil?

Yeah, this is a pretty good way to sell the level bonus as believable... the wizard has all these little arcane powers he can bring to bear, the cleric's just so blessed that the lock pops open for him, etc. It may not work in all cases but in general it helps finesse things.

1E and 4E are similar? Really? (Forked from: 1E Resurgence?)

You know actually I played one a while back called Dofus? Flash based tactics RPG, massively multiplayer, harvesting and crafting and all that. Very pretty game. Not much like any kind of D&D. I think this kind of perception is more typically leveled at the look & feel of some of the powers, as...

    Chunk of Meat

I'd imagine you'd have to be in a pretty dystopian setting to get any scratch for rat meat.

Forked Thread: Did 4e go far enough or to far?

He might have, I don't know, looked at copies of the material. Learn to think before you post dumb, vain gotchas here, there, and everywhere.

Where 3E and 4E players stand in the great 3E disputes

oookay. Pretty good, I thought, though I never really used them. I was in splat overload when ToB came out so I never bought it though I have looked at it a couple of times. Not really but I don't mind that it was often treated as a lead-in to a variety of martial PrCs. I also houseruled some...
