What Is Your Go-To Pick-Up TTRPG?

It always makes me sad to see books and boxes still in the shrink wrap. Ah. Mothership. That's another great one for no-prep one-shots. If you have the right booklets you can create an adventure almost as quick as with Pirate Borg. Hell, you could probably just roll up a Pirate Borg adventure...

"Read the book." LOL. You first.

    Draw Steel News

Daggerheart, p 150. QUICK REFERENCE: RESOLVING ACTION ROLLS If you’re unsure how to resolve a roll, think about these quick phrases: Success with Hope: Yes, and… (You get what you want and gain a Hope.) Success with Fear: Yes, but… (You get what you want, but there’s a consequence, and the GM...

    Shadowdark Shadowdark General Thread [+]

I think I kind of get it thanks to a recent Sly Flourish or Questing Beast video. Gamers will optimize the fun out of the game but they will also optimize the uncertainty out of the game. You can see this when gamers complain about exactly those kinds of loose systems, referee calls, fiat, etc...

I'm not sure that's a distinction that makes a difference. If people didn't think OD&D was broken and needed fixing there'd never have been any other RPGs*. Again, that's literally how the entire hobby came to be. Someone played a game, thought something was broken, and got to fixing it. Fix...

    OSR Healing tweak - proportionality

It looks good at first blush. Though I'd make it easier by just going with Hit Dice + level or + CON mod as the baseline and scale up from there. Basically simplify the math just for ease of use.

I feel you. But that's literally the entire hobby. Every single RPG you've ever played is "some person's glorified homebrew" or "some group of people's glorified homebrew."

    Trailer Red Sonja trailer

Gotta get those sweet, sweet Robert E. Howard IP dollars. Looks goofy, silly, unserious, and schlocky. I'm so in.

TPT is hosting a 75-player game of Mothership @ Gen Con 25

This sounds utterly bonkers. I can't wait to see it. Safely. From a great distance. Streaming, hopefully.

What Is Your Go-To Pick-Up TTRPG?

That’s another great one. So easy to hack into just about anything you’d want.

Pineapple Express: Someone Is Wrong on the Internet?

I think the RPG community’s version of touch grass should be throw dice. Meaning get off the internet and go play something.

What Is Your Go-To Pick-Up TTRPG?

Eat the Reich, Pirate Borg, WEG Star Wars, or something Free Kriegsspiel Renaissance. Eat the Reich for good clean horror-comedy fun. Vampires chewing their way through a bunch of Nazis is a fantastic way to spend an evening. Pirate Borg for some wild OSR adventures and goofy accents. Grab one...

Right? It just strikes me as a particular refinement of the broader OSR. A few unique bits, sure, like most OSR games, but also not wildly different or unique. Not saying it’s bad. But looking at pure text I don’t know that I could pick Shadowdark out of a dozen other, similar OSR-style games.

What are you reading in 2025?

Eh. At least Lin's stuff has something resembling pacing and a plot. To me that's the only real mark of a good writer. Writing the most beautiful sentences known to humanity is irrelevant if the story isn't engaging enough on its own to keep the reader awake.

Pineapple Express: Someone Is Wrong on the Internet?

Lefties of the world, unite. My dad had his left hand tied down at school. His mom went in and put a stop to that. I was lucky in that times had changed and all I got was dirty looks and sore hands from right-handed scissors and spiral-bound notebooks. I never did the hook thing. I just let the...

    [Gumshoe] Shires Out

Brennan Lee Mulligan has some interesting takes on Hobbits in the Dimension 20 Fantasy High series. That would be a fun spin off, too.

Pineapple Express: Someone Is Wrong on the Internet?

Isn't your recent kick telling people to read the book? Must be embarrassing that your complaint is just spelled out in black and white in the book, then.
