There's definitely a lot of content in the game. The Player's Manual and Referee's Manual are about as tall as LBBs, and a bit more than an inch-and-a-hald wider. The Player's Manual is about 250 pages thick, and the Referee's Manual about 235 pages. I took a pic of a manual next to a LBB...

I do agree the inside margins could have been wider. You don't have to open the book flat to be able to read (I'm reading through the book right now and I'm not damaging the binding at all it seems to me), but I do notice it sometimes, and that's a (very) mild annoyance.
