    D&D General Give me Beholders!

Lords of Madness for 3.5 still can't be beat for aberrations IMO.

    OSR OSR News Roundup

What is it with post-apocalyptic adventures about mutant chickens? Wasn't Famine In Far-Go enough already? Still, it's another chance to use the miniatures from Interloper so that's a plus.

Do most people nowadays think that ridiculous dumb Resident Evil movies are the original things and the video games are just derivatives?

Oh sure. Specifically, a few hundred thousand parthenogenic hens, with their initial clutches producing the first chickens built to use sexual reproduction. The extra step could have been skipped altogether but the Supposedly Intelligent Designer thought it was funnier that way, of course...

Are we the baddies? Oh.. yeah. Yeah, we're the baddies...

Don't forget to poison the food of as many of them you think you can get away with, framing the least-liked faction of goodies for the deed. Bonus points if you manage to fake your own death or incapacitation at the same time so no one suspects you.

    Dragon Reflections #79

What, the Ordeal story? They were dressing up for a Halloween party, not LARPing, and outside of Crystal's acting as part of the...prank? intervention? whatever you want to call it...no one's playing in character. There was some LARPing going on, but it was on a smaller scale and often...

    Dragon Reflections #79

As someone who spent their childhood on a farm, that certainly is a fantasy cover. Real rabbits are only welcome in the stewpot if you're a farmer.

    Dragon Reflections #79

There was a lengthy retrospective/memorial thread covering a fair part of his tabletop gaming work a couple of years back on the purple site. It begins here and is well worth a look IMO. "Prolific" is certainly an accurate description.

What are you reading in 2024?

Re-reading Forever War, with an eye toward Forever Free afterward. Not sure if I'll bother with Forever Peace or not, we'll see after I finish the actual (intensely weird) sequel book. Holding up as well as expected so far, big surprise. To make a cliched comparison, Forever War is a lot less...

    OSR OSR News Roundup

I've run both original Ynn and Stygian Library and I cannot agree with you more. They're fantastic - and I don't even generally like procedural games.

Anyone have reviews of the post-2000s Villains & Vigilantes stuff?

Nobody at all? Cripes. Guess the nostalgic folks mostly quit in the 80s and never looked at the "new" stuff in the 2010's despite some of it being written in the 80s and just having gone unpublished. Guess I'm either going to have to remain curious about the content quality or bite the bullet...

Looking for Players in State College

Wow, that brings back memories. I'd be up for this if you were running it in 1984, which is the last time I lived there. :) Out of curiosity, are there any game stores left in town? I was in Atherton Hall as a freshman and the FLGS of the day was a two-minute walk down the hill and across...

    RPG Evolution: Inspiration from Venice

The city's famous "mascot" is based on the Lion of St. Mark and would look right at home in most fantasy monster manuals. Not only is it slightly more anatomically plausible than your average griffin or hippogriff (go on, try to imagine the walk cycle on either of those things - eagle's feet...

OSR Through Ultan's Door has a Patreon now

Understandable. Not telling anyone what to do, but anything that streamlines the process of putting out more material about this setting is a Good Thing in my book. Just plain nifty.

    TSR [Let's Read] Polyhedron/Dungeon

Waiting for the surprise twist where the group morphs into a rock band and it becomes a Hijinx adventure. The mongrelman/red dragon is already covering the Scooby Doo/Jabberjaw/mascot role, right? :)

    Weird rules interpretations you've encountered?

Perfectly reasonable. I mean, the 1975 Dungeon! board game didn't hide the map, and Dungeons & Dragons is just some kind of spinoff game from it, right? :)

    What makes a TTRPG tactical?

You're going to find this is a very subjective term and one person's version may be radically different from the next. Shocking, I know. That said, my personal take is based mostly on how many decisions I get to make during a combat. That includes decisions to do things that aren't actively...

OSR Through Ultan's Door has a Patreon now

Don't see this mentioned on the OSR news roundup or elsewhere and it seems important enough to bear mentioning. Ben Laurence of Ultan's Door and the Mazirian's Garden blog is shifting to Patreon for funding future expansions to the Zyan setting. His last couple of blog posts explain the whys...

    Games that do 'ALIEN' well

He didn't actually type "naughty word" there. The censor automatically replaces the relevant text with "naughty word" when you try to cuss. I assume he's never run into that before and didn't preview his post.

    Rebellion Acquires Tunnels & Trolls

Especially after reading the Liavek shared world stories. They aren't T&T by any means, but their rules for magic are a very strong example of luck as the "fuel" for magic, both trained and untrained. :) Wish we'd gotten more of that series. Still stands out in the crowd of similar projects...

TSR The Full & Glorious History of NuTSR

For some reason I have expectations of a very slim core book with the basic, extremely generic game engine, thicker worldbooks for each career field you might "play" in, and a strange rule where you can assign character advancement either to the one you're currently playing as or to yourself as...
