2025 Monster Manual to Introduce Male Versions of Hags, Medusas, and Dryads

Medusa, when not referencing Ovid, was a monster woman with monster sisters who was never cursed. Also, still doesn't explain why you felt the need to point to elementals and ask why this was needed. Elementals don't even always have HEADS, they are a bit different from a obviously female being.

D&D General How Often Should a PC Die in D&D 5e?

No, I came nowhere near telling him he was too jaded to play DnD.

D&D General How Often Should a PC Die in D&D 5e?

I honestly feel like you need to expand your media consumption sometimes. No, it wouldn't be bad for the hobby in the long run. There is literally no reason for that to be true. Death isn't some magic ingredient X that makes a game good by its mere presence. Tons, and I do mean in literally...

D&D General How Often Should a PC Die in D&D 5e?

It wasn't a film. It was a British person who talks about Britain, reporting on an article published in Britain, about this exact thing. Possible I could have misunderstood them, but it was a 60 second short talking about a news article.

D&D General How Often Should a PC Die in D&D 5e?

I was actually thinking about Sparhawk, the aging knight-magician who duels the ancient evil military god. I think Sparhawk was the name he had at least. Edit: Which of course, doesn't change the point. You say a "better example" but the truth is... no, Durnik would not be a better example of...

D&D General How Often Should a PC Die in D&D 5e?

Except, on this very site, I've heard a lot people reject that and say they played a very different game from Gygax. So, again, this idea that Gygax's methods must have been good, because the majority of people played that way.... holds less and less water, and it seems it was complicated. And...

D&D General How Often Should a PC Die in D&D 5e?

Since I never said that anyone was too jaded to play DnD, this seems like an utterly ridiculous question.

D&D General How Often Should a PC Die in D&D 5e?

I can never convince him that his style isn't universally beloved or followed by all people? That it isn't the best thing for all people? Cause THAT is what I'm trying to convince him of. His response to people saying they get very upset and frustrated by the loss of characters is to essentially...

So Much Art From the 2025 Monster Manual

You keep saying they were rape demons in medieval mythology... but I've always heard they were associated with dreams and sleep. Their name literally means "the one who lay on top" and they were one of the original sleep paralysis demons. Yes, they gained a sexual element over time, but their...

2025 Monster Manual to Introduce Male Versions of Hags, Medusas, and Dryads

Ah, well that would explain things. He was far more likely to break into latin and praise the emperor than talk about Greek stuff. Though, I will note, your wikipedia entry does not say that the Greek Satyr was a goat-like man. So if people just associated the Roman Faunus (who were goat-like)...

2025 Monster Manual to Introduce Male Versions of Hags, Medusas, and Dryads

You think there might be some difference between a monster always depicted as being completely androgynous and only even vaguely having heads and arms, and a monster which is specifically called out as being a woman? Some difference that makes it a decent question to ask why there is only one...

Would certainly be possible, if they decided to do that, but it seems like they won't do that officially. Which is a little disappointing.

Gorgeous art and such a powerful concept of what a Nymph actually IS

Can't help but agree on that. I'm not against the drowned maiden trope, but seeing it a half dozen times with tiny little variations (oh, this version has seaweed in her hair instead of black pits for eyes) is boring as heck. Give me a shapeshifting horse instead!

2025 Monster Manual to Introduce Male Versions of Hags, Medusas, and Dryads

Had a classics enthusiast tell me in great detail about how what we call a Satyr in DnD is actually a Faun, and male and female fauns have existed since ancient greece. And actually the Satyr was a horse-faced being. This making most of the goat-man depictions being a renaissance creation...

2025 Monster Manual to Introduce Male Versions of Hags, Medusas, and Dryads

I would love to see some playable gnolls, though I'm always divided because I love using them as fiend monsters too. I just had to go to work today, so the thread continued without my input.

Doesn't surprise me that much. I can think of.... three different fantasy works off the top of my head with major Gnoll characters. The big one is the Wandering Inn, which has AWESOME gnoll characters

As a side note on this, I was recently watching a short from a UK Youtuber who was talking about Royal Assent. Turns out, at least during the time of Queen Elizabeth II, advisors from both the Prime Minister and the Royal Family would meet constantly to discuss upcoming laws to ensure that the...

And if the whole point is the process.... then it is a bad thing when that process is suddenly cut-off with no warning. It is all well and good to say "it is not the destination, but the journey" but when the journey is being squished by a tree that fell while you were walking down the sidewalk...
