Which non-D&D fantasy RPG do you currently play?

Right now I'm running Cypher, and playing in a HERO based fantasy game - and am planning a multi genre that includes fantasy using Modern Age. And Pathfinder, but I include that in "D&D" for system purposes.

Poll: WWYD if You had Your Fav Character’s Powers in the Real World?

My favorite character is a martial artist, with super Ki powers, but unlike Iron Fist, they are not visible. When I retired the character she was the tactician and combat trainer for our campaign world's JLA or Avengers. I'd teach martial arts, and enjoy being in tip top shape. edit - not...

What's your favorite superhero TTRPG and why?

Champions/Hero - I've been playing it for 35 years plus. It just fits my approach and preferences for RPGs in general, and superheroes in particular. My avatar is my longest played character in that system (something like 12 years). I've looked at others, currently Sentinel comics (for a really...

    D&D 5E (2014) New WotC Survey! Learn About A New D&D Product!

When I answered that I don't use discord or beyond, it pretty much ended for me.

Cypher System by Monte Cook Games: what do you think about it?

It's my system of choice these days (edging out Genesys and Modern Age) - I love how simple it is. If you are looking for detailed tactical combat to drive the flavor - stay far away. It's up to GM and player to make descriptions in combat interesting - if you group defaults in D&D to "I rolled...

Do you look at updates before pledging on a Kickstarter?

Yes. Unless it's an "instapledge" I look at updates on active kickstarters. I look at it as a preview of the communication style for the project as a whole. Very few updates, and lack of answer to question and I will be leery about backing it. Daily (or more) updates (along with stretch goals)...

    Dragon Reflections #43

My favorite one of those are the two authors that did the Psionics articles, arguing about what a power point was. The other I remembered - I don't remember the article but it was about some realism or something talked about the weight of a round stone to lift or about how deep you were, and...

D&D 3.x Trying to remember what book this bit was in

Not that - I have all the Unearthed/Evolved Arcana stuff - it was my favorite 3rd edition setting/variant rules by far (and I pledged for the Cypher version).

D&D 3.x Trying to remember what book this bit was in

I know it was for 3.0 or 3.5, not another d20 game, as it was specifically for use with the Psionics rules for that system.

D&D 3.x Trying to remember what book this bit was in

I remember white pages, 2 column layout, but my memory may be playing tricks on me. I think 3rd party (and the visuals my minds eye are bringing up look Malhovoc Press style) but I can't think of a book from them I haven't checked, so it might have been official.

D&D 3.x Trying to remember what book this bit was in

I'm organizing old PDFs, and reading them (of course) made me think of this specific book - I remember owning in print or PDF a book on psionics, and as an appendix it talked about converting standard spells to Psionic Powers, then listed a bunch with 1 or 2 line descriptions as a starter. I...

D&D 5E (2014) Ravenloft Previews of Dementlieu, Lamordia, and Har'Akir

Nice. I ran my a group through the original, in Mythus/Dangerous Journeys a long time ago. Maybe I'll take a look at the 5E version.

Do you modify/write-in your game books?

I tend never to write in my books, of any sort (I don't have cookbooks). If I am studying for a class I will, but to me that is not a permanent book, it's a study guide. My books get wear, spine issues and such as I love them and use them, but I don't write in them, nor dog ear them - I want my...

How often do you enforce laws in your games?

Doing the "not fantasy" answer that I do so often to these types of questions. We mostly play superheroes, and we tend to play goody two shoes supers in general. So really the only laws that get broken are the ones that are part of the genre - vigilantism and such - which really do not have...

Worlds of Design: Which Came First, the Character or Their Backstory?

My most played genre is the Superhero genre. Following source tropes, there is a solid backstory to most characters, some of which could be done in one line, others in a couple of paragraphs, but it is part of the genre. And as permanent death is also fairly rare in the source material, the time...

Monte Cook Games' Darkest House Is Designed For Online Play

Interesting - for me, I detest OSR (I spent my time in those games years ago when they were originally out, and I was very happy to find something different), and I am always uncomfortable with a strongly narrative system* (like the Sentnel Comic RPG- though I do want to try that out). So for...

Monte Cook Games' Darkest House Is Designed For Online Play

HERO 5th released genre sourcebooks that were a lot like what Cypher is doing - advice on genre, new rules (kept to a minimum) to run that setting, and sometimes a setting to show you how it works. I actually found that to be the best approach to releasing material for me (I know it isn't for...

Monte Cook Games' Darkest House Is Designed For Online Play

Comparing a core book to a book that was stated to be a premium special book... if you compare core book to core book it isn't nearly so back Cypher System Core rulebook is $69.99 - 10 bucks more expensive I grant you, and while the page count it a bit less... the game needs less to be able to...

Monte Cook Games' Darkest House Is Designed For Online Play

As someone who loves Cypher in all it's forms, I've found the prices of the Cypher books completely in line with other RPGs, notably the physical releases. They books have been well made, the art is fantastic, the editing generally really good (more so than a number of other RPG books I own). So...

Monte Cook Games' Darkest House Is Designed For Online Play

I don't even play online, we are traditionalists that don't use electronics to game (aside from one who keeps a digital character sheet). Its us around a table with dice (when safe to do so). So this product would have no use for me. The concept and idea are really interesting, though. I'm sure...
