Just avoid the whole mess and play a genre where characters don't die (or die permanently) like Superheroes.

HERO and Genesys are my go to games. D&D is the only non universal system I play.

My most played and GMed genre is Superheroes - so that tone (people doing the right thing because it's the right thing to do and/or power/responsibility correlation - tends to be what I like in D&D.

That's just target practice though - in a real fight bob would be able to half dodge lots of incoming arrows (higher hit point total) than his son. 5E combat keeps accuracy bounded but has experience in combat dealt with by other mechanics.
