Ravnica Table of Contents & More

I was speaking of the world, not character. I don't have the book yet, but looking at the ToC - I see it all over - I'm sure the guild sections will be giving info on the world, Chapter 3 looks to be all about the world, and the adventures section looks to have lots of information on the world...

Ravnica Table of Contents & More

The way I look at it - this isn't the "Guide to MtG in D&D" it's about Ravnica - and that is all about the guilds. I didn't want to see any spells, or planeswalking in the book. I wanted the setting that informs those magic sets to be written for D&D. It looks like that was done. So I am happy...

Worlds of Design: “All About Me” RPGs (Part 2)

People play for different reasons. I have a life I like to escape from - worries about "is the car going to run until I have the money to fix it" type issues. I have enough tactics and struggling to survive in real life. When I play RPGs I prefer that it is away from those concerns (thinking...

Worlds of Design: “All About Me” RPGs (Part 1)

I have to say this is good about this article - in describing a playstyle that is not his own, the OP doesn't talk like it is the word of God from on high like previous articles have; We have "because it’s so vastly different from the styles I’m accustomed to ", "Some people don’t care. I do."...

How Do You Enjoy D&D Away From the Table

lol. D&D is actually a secondary system for me - we play HERO every week - that is complex enough, and our other TTRPG is even lighter / less mechanical than 5E - Genesys (based on the FFG Star Wars system). More than anything it came down to me and the wife not wanting to go to the work to GM...

Looking for solo & 2-player tabletop recommendations

I tend to keep my hobbies seperate - I don't use online stuff when I roleplay. I play video games on console, single player. My board games are a time to unplug. If a game requires an app or an online connection to play it (board or RPG) I won't play that game.

How Do You Enjoy D&D Away From the Table

Not much these days - I spend a bit of time here, and at Paizo's forums. For the last 20+ years - I spent hours reading books, including 3rd party books, building characters, designing house rules - For Pathfinder & 3.x. Did similar things with Hero too. But these days, I don't. I found 5E to...

    D&D 5E (2014) Why does 5E SUCK?

I've had a couple campaigns just blow up on me due to unforseen circumstances. And I almost destroyed a game, but having been a GM, I retired the character and built another (this was in Champions/Hero). I can laugh at it now.....

    D&D 5E (2014) Why does 5E SUCK?

I find this amusing as half of the things complained about are optional rules that don't exist in every game.

    Mearls On D&D's Design Premises/Goals

I can see that. I've found over the decades that personality mechanics get in the way of the connection. If the mechanics are mirroring a physical action - a die roll = picking a lock - then I'm ok. But when the mechanics start influencing how the character would feel, then it isn't coming from...

    Mearls On D&D's Design Premises/Goals

Well stated. I stand corrected. :)

    Mearls On D&D's Design Premises/Goals

Again, I see where you are coming from, and I disagree. One of my main reasons for playing RPGs, is the roleplaying itself. Deep immersion, in becoming the character, feeling what the character would feel, being what the character is. That can be achieved with nothing but dialog and emotion...

    Mearls On D&D's Design Premises/Goals

I can understand where you are coming from, but I don't agree. There are plenty of places where roleplaying happens with no mechanical impact; interactions between characters as they get to know someone, dialog for a romantic scene with an npc that is done without dice rolls (just as a way to...

    Mearls On D&D's Design Premises/Goals

Genesys works not unlike that - it uses FFG's Star Wars narrative dice system, which really loosens up play. The reason I thought "Bad rule" - I don't know about Dungeon World (haven't played it), but D&D seems to be intended for a wide range of styles, and without specific X difficulty...

    Mearls On D&D's Design Premises/Goals

First agreed that I am not covering the field, I was using the examples on the extremes at both ends, seen in the history of D&D. As for the above, that would work in some games, and not work in others; if there are modifiers to that roll, then that helps, because some situations are harder...

    Mearls On D&D's Design Premises/Goals

In the 3.x and 4E games what I described is what I saw being played - (knowing that the plural of anecdote is not data) - just speaking of personal experience. Overall I've found 5E to much much easier to teach to people who have never roleplayed than 3.x/PF or 4E; and the minimal mechanics...

Would you play a D&D campaign without leveling?

No. I don't play RPGs that do not have progression. Even my favorite board games have progression.

    Mearls On D&D's Design Premises/Goals

Agreed Mike Mornard, one of the early players, talked about that kind of play. That they just tried what they thought up, and the GM would adjudicate how well it worked. The classic "cover in mud, get bees angry, lead other monsters to the bees, and get the stuff while they fight" was an...

    Table Rules

Our first two - No smokers (one player has sever asthma and smoke hanging on clothes, even if 2 or 3 hours old, in a room for even a short length, can cause a major attack). No alcohol, and don't show up inebriated or tipsy. Beyond that - All games are PG-13, respect the boundaries. Be...
