    D&D 5E (2014) Favourite DnD Setting

Spelljammer by a long shot. It's the only published setting I actually used pretty much as written. Other I either ignored because I didn't care for it (Dark Sun, Planescape), or modified beyond recognition (using pieces of multiple "generic" fantasy world all together (Greyhawk, FR others).

D&D 5E (2014) How do you feel about PC abilities being nerfed by the DM?

I play lots of HERO where the balance comes from GM and player back and forth rather than from the system itself. If that happens in D&D and handled with respect, not a demand, I'm cool with it. I build a character for a new Champions Campaign with a GM I had not gamed with before. I had a 30...

D&D General How has D&D changed over the decades?

Part of why I love it so much. :D

    D&D General Cosmological constants

I did something similar in one of mine - the Etheral was everywhere - the Etheral that was closest the positive energy node was the Astral, and the Etheral that was closer to the negative energy node was the plane shadow. The side that touched the astral and prime was the feywild (lots of...

D&D General How has D&D changed over the decades?

I think Superheroes is the genre that best encapsulates that. Lots of combat, very little permanent death.

Pathfinder 1E Pathbreaker - musings of an amateur game designer

So with what I have, it's pretty obvious I wasn't a huge fan of super tight focused classes, except in relation to broader ones. I like open classes that you can define you character the way you want... but having more focused and specifically flavored classes are fine too, but only after the...

Pathfinder 1E Pathbreaker - musings of an amateur game designer

I've always like the D&D fantasy - the genre it emulates being D&D (through editions) but until 3rd came out, I was not really into system design, or seeing how things behind it went for D&D. However in 1985 I was introduced to HERO system which became my primary system for 30+ years. I loved...

Pathfinder 1E Pathbreaker - musings of an amateur game designer

Thanks for the link, I've read it; huge fan of just about everything Owen has done. And while I am "writing" my heartbreaker right now, I've been playing this way since about a year and a half into playing 3.0. I just decided to write it up as a formal game now rather than just notes of...

Pathfinder 1E Pathbreaker - musings of an amateur game designer

Some base assumptions for the game - this is set up for solo play, with published modules in mind. So that means that the PC must be tougher and much more broad based in ability than a regular character. The reason for this, mostly, is that the wife GMs, and I play. And (until covid) ran a group...

Pathfinder 1E Pathbreaker - musings of an amateur game designer

This is a thread I'm starting and will be posting in sporadically. The title "Amateur game designer" is sort of self aggrandizing. shrug. I've sold some gaming articles, but nothing huge. But I love to tinker and adjust rules - I know others do. So the purpose of this, even if no one reads it...

    D&D 5E (2014) Paizo's 'The Abomination Vaults' Pathinder AP Coming to 5E

As an off topic note - I spent the last 30+ years with HERO as my primary system, so for me a combat that comes in under 45 minutes or an hour is doing really well. lol.

D&D General Your favorite character experience?

My favorite character overall took some GM allowing of re-flavoring - but I ran a monk/sorcerer with all the sorcerer spells flavored as ch'i type stuff (a fireball was "Hadoken") and the somatic and verbal components being the martial arts move with yelling a keyword. This was in pathfinder. It...

D&D General Your favorite character experience?

I've told this story before, but don't mind sharing again. The game was first ed D&D. It was 1986 (so a couple of years before Drizzt showed up) , and I had discovered Champions the year before, in Oregon. I had moved back to Utah, and was desperately looking for a champs group, but had found...

How long have you been gaming?

I started with Holmes Basic. A friend introduced me to it - they had been in Kansas over the summer and had got that game - so they ran a module (B1) and I joined. I was hooked ever since. I gamed with them, and bought the brand new nifty hardcover Players Handbook, and it took me a bit to...

D&D General Appendix EN+ :. What movies, books, and comics inspire your for D&D?

Comic: Legion of Superheroes - specifically the Levitz run. I saw large groups making subgroups with different make up each time could work, and for light level play. Movie - Star Wars (the original before it was called a New Hope) - it had a huge impact on my life in general (I was 10 when it...

D&D General Appendix EN - What one book/series inspires your D&D?

The wife who is not a member wanted me to add Lord Dunsany - specifically King of Elfland's Daughter. So while I posted twice, it was actually 2 people.

D&D General Appendix EN - What one book/series inspires your D&D?

A lot of the ones I would post have been covered, but one to add. Belgariad/Mallorean by David and Leigh Eddings. Had a huge influence on me to be able to run series events in game, but keep the tone somewhat light, rather than descent into grimdark.

Not suprisingly this was the series I came to mention.

Is it just me? Tired of huge books

I used both PDF and physical books about evenly. Some are useful in one circumstance, but not in another... however when I buy actual physical books, I go for the larger ones (I find 128 pages to be at the very minimum end of a book I will physically buy). Partially because I am something of a...
