D&D 5E (2014) Jimjar question (From the Abyss, minor spoilers)

Garl Glittergold probably wouldn't have died to a crit from a Kuo-Toan High Priest of Blipdoolpoolp. Jimjar: "I bet he doesn't kill me..." Splat.

D&D 5E (2014) Mechanic proposal for Beast Master

Well in theory your attack actions might not ever do anything either - 'cuz crap dice.

Animal Master Archetype for many classes

Beastmaster for everyone!!! Well maybe not for everyone but I can see a generic Beastmaster subclass one might give as an option to a bunch of classes. Basically it takes the core of the Ranger Beastmaster - and the only tweaks it needs is the 'Pet can fast-stealth' in favored terrain. And...

D&D 5E (2014) Mechanic proposal for Beast Master

I think this is a valid path a group might take. Personally I think it is too fiddly with the extra dice rolling. If I wanted BM Rangers to be able to trade their Bonus action for a Pet Attack I would strongly consider adding Proficiency in Animal Handling as a requirement - but probably skip...

D&D 5E (2014) Tidal Wave Vs. Fire Elemental

As a third level spell I would have let it be the equal of Fireball against fire creatures (8d6, 28 damage) which is more than 50% better then the normal 4d8 (18 damage). Probably toss in Disadvantage on the Save. Once volume calculation based reasoning starts applying you're opening things up...

D&D 5E (2014) [SPOILERS] Out of the Abyss Escape Scenario: To Fudge or not to Fudge?

With over half the party succumbing to temporary madness (mostly in the form of inactivity) the rogue just shrugged his shoulders and was like, "I guess the only thing I can do I take on Demogorgon." I immediately suggested they at least try to drag the unresponsive members to safety.

    New Ranger Fixes!!!!!1!!one

I think the subclass bonus spells will be house-ruled in for Hunter and Beastmaster at a lot of tables if the build goes live.

Fighter attack: extra attacks vs extra damage

I let classes with extra attack do either. It got shot down in the playtest but mostly as a preference, not for balance IMO. I think it helps thrown weapons and crossbows be more viable without needing feats.

    D&D 5E (2014) My fighter-subclass warlord

So basically everyone in the party can benefit once per short rest. Some during combat and some right before a short rest. Reminds me of the Bard Song of Rest. Amount of healing depends on how damage is distributed. This is weaker for allies that get focus fired, much better if everyone...

Unearthed Arcana Light, Dark, Underdark - November's Unearthed Arcana

Size is not an indicator of reach. If you scrub through the Monster Manual I think you may be surprised by how many large creatures do not have reach greater than 5'. Usually reach is from Huge humanoids (Giants), or large creatures with snake-like necks or long tails/tentacles (like dragons...

Unearthed Arcana Light, Dark, Underdark - November's Unearthed Arcana

The fighting styles feel more like either/or options for campaigns without feats. In large part they step into the same design space as feats, and present seeming challenges combined with feats. Using both, I feel like I'd need to add a bunch of provisos, addenda, and quid pro quos to keep...

Fixing the fighter: the surge problem

I think there can be an issue with the nova of the Fighter not keeping pace with the Nova of the other melee/fighting classes for certain styles of encounter pacing. I think your solution is too much, and is too disruptive to the action economy. My preference is a damage boost per attack that...

Puts on evil DM hat: "Sentinel!!" Just kidding.

Time to "Disengage!" And advance. It just reminds me that at the point a tactic/defense becomes too good. You never get to use it.

Unearthed Arcana Light, Dark, Underdark - November's Unearthed Arcana

"and as part of the same reaction" I would interpret this as a key requirement. If your OA doesn't use up your reaction then no triggering of Relentless avenger since that was intended as the limiting mechanism. Since this is effectively in playtest mode I wouldn't get too hung up on RAW.

Unearthed Arcana Light, Dark, Underdark - November's Unearthed Arcana

This is the first one in a while where I felt like it is something I would use. Add Close-quarters shooter and remove Crossbow Expert and Sharpshooter. I would probably take a page from Deep Stalker and also add some bonus spells to Hunter and Beastmaster.

D&D 5E (2014) Comprehend Languages and "literal" meaning

It is fully within the dungeon master's purview to screw with the utility of spells. Or google translated from English to Chinese to Spanish and back to English: "It is totally screw range and utility spells Dungeon Master." Which obviously means, as a wizard, both your ranged and utility...

D&D 5E (2014) Comprehend Languages and "literal" meaning

When it says literal translation that is just saying that it won't fill you in on double entendres, innuendos, codes, or cant. Which is exactly what the second paragraph says. Comprehend Languages would translate the plain meaning or intention so I believe it would handle metaphor (unlike...

    D&D 5E (2014) Warlord Name Poll

Banneret then Warlord then Marshal Looking up the British rank of Marshal I hadn't realized it was the highest rank (above general). Warlord has already grown on me so it's my second. The negative connotations are comparable to Rogue, Sorceror, Thief or Assassin.
