    D&D 5E (2014) Interpreting "normal maximum" for Ranger's Companions

For comparison - Basic Rules companions and UA spirit companion Table with HP for companions with HD equal to Ranger Level.

    D&D 5E (2014) Increasing spell power

Most of my preferences are strongly tied to how I want Hit Points, Healing, and other game mechanics working to simulate a narrative genre rather than simulating how the game world works. Thus there will always be fundamental disagreements over these issues and my solutions since they speak to...

    D&D 5E (2014) Monster Manual 2

The spring miniatures set is called - Monster Menagerie. Kind of hoping the Spring AP follows the same theme and is full of new monsters. The APs are the only thing we know that is planned on a regular schedule. The APs are the main source of official new monsters. My main unofficial source...

    D&D 5E (2014) Why Would I Play a Ranger?

OMG, ...turns in his NitPicker badge. Can't believe we let this go 9 pages.

    D&D 5E (2014) Why Would I Play a Ranger?

Once suggestions to buff the Hunter's DPS enter - especially buffing the Ranger at 1st, it really feels like we've left the station for "the Ranger needs to be the best at everything land". Best DPS, best exploration, best action economy. Maybe we need a "lazylord/princess of the wild" Ranger...

    D&D 5E (2014) Inspiring leader feat questions

Play it out in real time. The Inspiring Leader should have no problem speaking 'inspiringly' for an hour or two while the other players sit around. Huge amounts of prep -- and nothing happens.

D&D 5E (2014) Out of the Abyss - opinions and ideas requested

Personally, I would have the new character as a fresh prisoner on his way to the Prison cave. Another guard has his stuff (he may still be wearing his armor) When the drow arrive at the guard tower, they can rescue him. Have an elite with the new guards and show him off vs. the NPCs. An...

    D&D 5E (2014) Increasing spell power

My main problem with Hold and Sleep spells is that they are used contrary to every genre except the 'D&D' genre. The 5th edition version is balanced with how they are normally used in the D&D genre (spells we cast on enemies to make them easier to kill - often at no risk). Often as an...

    D&D 5E (2014) Why Would I Play a Ranger?

Beastmaster is lacking, here's a buff for Hunters In general or just for Rangers? Looks like a buff for Hunters. Also general Ranger boost. Where's your Beastmaster love? Not to say those aren't issues some people have with the Ranger class. Jody -- spooning with his panther.

    D&D 5E (2014) Why Would I Play a Ranger?

Archery Style is +2 to attack, not damage. So 2d10+8 (19) before Hunter's Mark or Colossus Slayer.

    D&D 5E (2014) Why Would I Play a Ranger?

A 5th level Hunter Ranger with the Archery Fighting Style and an extra attack (4th ASI for Dex, starting stat of 16), +9 to hit, up to 1d10+4 x 2 damage. Plus Colossus slayer for +1d8 and 2 Hunter's mark attacks for +2d6. Range 150 feet - 2 rounds or more of firing before they reach melee...

    D&D 5E (2014) Interpreting "normal maximum" for Ranger's Companions

At Beastmaster Ranger level 3, there's a big difference between having a 32hp Giant Frog and a 18hp Giant Frog. Or a 24hp Panther and 13hp Panther. Of course the HP advantage goes away eventually. Seems like it would muddy the feedback depending on which version you were running.

    D&D 5E (2014) Increasing spell power

I think reverting spells to earlier versions or different edition mechanics is not broken in the mechanical sense. It may be broken in the 'unbalanced' or 'not fun for someone' sense but if they were fine in X edition that way, they are 'fine' in 5th edition that way. Sounds like once you fail...

D&D 5E (2014) Out of the Abyss PC Races

Only one of the captive NPCs in OotA knows their way around. I'm going to have his head explode next week. Being an Underdark race is no guarantee of knowing your way around.

    D&D 5E (2014) Purple Dragon Knight = Warlord?

I'm not sure what a Warlord is once you remove any kind of Leadership (inspiration) or giving orders/training (tactics)? That's the power source. I have presented an opt-out build on the Command Point Warlord. It involves opting in as a trained ally to get the most benefit. If no one really...

    D&D 5E (2014) Interpreting "normal maximum" for Ranger's Companions

I had been interpreting this as Maximum hit points for a normal creature of that kind, but now I'm thinking "maximum" is reference to full hit points. For example, "Tough: Your hit point maximum increases .... " an obvious reference to full hit points. Which do you play it as?

Tweaking the ranger instead of rebuilding from the ground up.

"So giving access to all fighting styles a fighter gets seems reasonable. Frankly no reason not to do the same for Paladins." Increased options can very much be an increase in power. Great Weapon fighting would be a strong option if you fix both Hunter's Mark (concentration aspect as melee) and...

Making Dancing Lights, Friends and Light a More Attractive Choice

Blasphemy on the House rule forums. Especially in light of how many tables add Delay back in as a house rule.
