D&D 5E (2014) What the warlord needs in 5e and how to make it happen.

If I'm limited to those 3 then, I guess a combination of 1 and 2, but really I like having the option to run a low/less magic campaign and still have the dynamics of combat hit point recovery. Fighter, Barbarian, Rogue, Monk, and a 'Warlord' to cover the missing support and healing since the...

D&D 5E (2014) Why do so many DMs use the wrong rules for invisibility?

As the melting pot edition, this seems like it should be the default for 5e. Lacking a preferred rule from a previous edition, use the 5e version or an adaptation of the previous rule. That was what I expected from the DMG - a bunch of modified ways that previous editions handled some of the...

D&D 5E (2014) How to balance combat when 2 characters are average and one is extremely overpowered?

One of the things I appreciate about 5e is that the numbers fall within a certain range based on level so it is pretty easy to spot when someone is calculating something wrong. Normally point-buy characters start with a +4 to +5 to hit (Archery style allows +7) . At 6th normally the range has...

D&D 5E (2014) How to balance combat when 2 characters are average and one is extremely overpowered?

That looks correct except if he has 2 feats (skulker and crossbow expert). The halfling ability to hide behind allies is 'Naturally Stealthy'.

D&D 5E (2014) How to balance combat when 2 characters are average and one is extremely overpowered?

I suspect that he is using Expertise on his attack and saying that he +1 bonus for the magic crossbow adds to that. Dex 20 (legit) +(3 proficiency +1 crossbow) doubled with Expertise -not legit = +13 to hit. Actual to hit is +9. The stealth feat is irrelevent and may be shorthand for the...

D&D 5E (2014) How to balance combat when 2 characters are average and one is extremely overpowered?

If he is using Expertise with armor proficiency he is probably using it for his attack proficiency. Neither of those is valid by the rules.

D&D 5E (2014) How to balance combat when 2 characters are average and one is extremely overpowered?

I think a 17th level game would be pretty hard to run as a new DM. As a player of 36 years I don't run games at that level with ease. +13 to hit is pretty high in 5th. +6 proficiency doesn't happen until 17th. +5 for ability scores and +2 from archery style (+13 with ranged). Any magic...

Short Rest Recovery and Daily Endurance.

I'd like to try a story-based or episodic style structure where short and long rests are represented as scene changes where 'time passes'. Every 2, 3 or 4 scene changes is a long rest and the remainder are short rests. And I'd probably tell the players straight up the way the adventure is...

    D&D 5E (2014) Dealing with a Heavily Armored Paladin?

I don't use the tables. I pass out magic items like candy. My party killed Frazzy at 12th, most of the rest at 13th, Orcus at 14th, and man-handled Demogorgon at 15th. And that was my intention. Those +2 or +3 items made a huge difference (multiple levels per plus). And I'll do it again in SKT.

    D&D 5E (2014) Dealing with a Heavily Armored Paladin?

+1 Plate is a Legendary item (17th+). +2 Plate is fraction of a percentage chance on the Legendary table (.00133...). You are 18 times more likely to get a Holy Avenger than +2 Plate. Plate armor by itself is the equivalent of a Rare magic item (500-5000gp, Level 5+). Of course then they pass...

D&D 5E (2014) Creature immunity and secondary effects

I think the RAW is clear. But there is no compulsion for a DM to follow RAW. Many times I prefer to make a more narrative ruling.

I'm open to a renaming on skald but I think Skald captures the more Martial version of the Bard than Minstrel (roguish?) or a name that implies a certain instrument. Working on firming up the 4th revision.

D&D 5E (2014) The At Will Attack Granting Thing

I think there will be multiple solutions. I don't think making the Warlord the 'extra damage' class would be THE solution. I'm sure one could make a balanced extra damage granting class however.

For herbalism stuff I'd roll it into a more detailed Medicine check system and general use with Herbalism kit proficiency. Reworded the Bonds of Firendship and split off Circle of Friends to make things more clear. Noted that the Inspiration bonus on Rejuvenation replaces Con. Waiting for any...

    D&D 5E (2014) 103 Days - 1381 products

Subtracting the WotC Art packets and maps. Just past the 100 day mark, we have an average of 13+ products a day. Hundreds of authors and 3 products highlighted by Mearls and co. Just over a week until the second UA highlighting DMs Guild products. Products from the first UA are hanging at...

DMs Guild The Warlord posted on DMs Guild

Going to move Mellored's Review here: The bonds of friendship serves only 2 purposes: player agency and a "Bless"-like limit for buff powers. Completely ditchable if those aren't issues. Or this could be ditched and the buff powers just say: up to 3, 4, or 5 allies depending on tier...

D&D 5E (2014) Reviews of Warlordish options - Starting with the Noble

Maybe I'm missing it, but it does the 1 point stabilize heal. The main benefit of the Healer feat is Level+4+1d6 once per short rest as an action which is the first option for a standup restoration. I didn't see anything with that level of Healing. Sorry I forgot about the shortbow thing...

D&D 5E (2014) Reviews of Warlordish options - Starting with the Noble

Weapon Master (Complex Fighter-Full Class) by Frank Dell (mellored) This is a 13 page document with a title page and about 11 1/2 pages of Class with the majority of the space as Adept and Mastery abilities for every weapon. Reading as a PDF the document looks fine but when printed the lack of...
