    $5 4E PHB @ GenCon!

This. Your 40% figure is right on for the publisher's cut, So Wotc is indeed making $8.99 more that it would if someone bought the same two books through normal channels. (And even more than that if someone bought one of the higher-priced hardcovers instead). Of course a little bit of that is...

D&Di - Monster Builder Beta Launch Announced

My one huge gripe is that Equipment isn't customizable--Anything I want to give my monster, I've got to pick off a list. The fact that I can make up a language or a keyword, but not a posession is pretty silly. I'd also like the option to recharge powers under specified circumstances (such as...

Building a 4E sandbox: How would you do it?

I think a good rule of thumb when it comes to monster roles and party levels is this: *PCs should generally face opponents within three levels of themselves. *If a monster is four or more levels above the Party, then increase the group role (minions become normal, normals become elite, elites...

4th Edition for low-magic historical gaming

There seem to be a pretty decent number of warlord powers that don't require the warlord to hit for their various buff effects to happen. I think you could build a reasonably effective warlord that has crap strength, but great Int and Cha, to take advantage of those powers.

    Big Dark Sun hint

Really, the best solution is just to say that the divine power source lets you channel the power of the sorcerer kings, include some blanket mechanical tweaks to reflect that change, and come up with an elemental priest class. I'm not really attached to the cosmology they eventually came up with...

    Big Dark Sun hint

Cirno, I think I have to disagree. The Dark Sun PCs were always supposed to be incredible superheroes (rolling 5d4 for stats, free psionic talent, etc.) Heck, the very first supplement released for Dark Sun was an epic level handbook. Really, the PCs were destined to overthrow sorcerer kings...

Need some Help with Cut Scenes

My Advice: limit your cutscenes to six sentences, of which only three or four should be dialogue. Start the scene as far into the action as you can, and end it as soon as you can. If the endpoint of your scene isn't immediately obvious, include a transition back to the PCs. Examples:

The Character Builder and House Rules

Man, I did not know that button was there. While I'd love fully editable power cards (and, of course the ability to include custom-designed character sheets), the ability to add powers that show up with their own cards is pretty damned sweet.

    Big Dark Sun hint

Per creator Troy Denning, the novel metaplot disaster had less to do with a desire to change the setting and more to do with the way that the novels department and game department interacted. Dark•Sun would have really benefited from the "Novels aren't canon" rule that Eberron uses. Anyway...

    Easy-Go Classes for Beginners?

I actually recommend the Rogue for people who've played 3.5e, because they haven't actually changed much from their previous incarnation. Sure, they've got powers now, but sneak attack is still sneak attack. Cleric, though it's changed a great deal, is probably the most intuitive leader for...

    4th Edition in Modern Times

Here's a list of skills I developed for a modern setting. There are a few more skills than in core 4e, so consider letting each character take an extra skill (or two extra skills if you're re-fluffing other races as human). Academics Int Acrobatics Dex Art Wis Athletics Str Bluff Cha...

    Anyone got some firearms?

I worked out some firearms rules for a 4e-like d20 Modern adaptation. By design, they do considerably more damage than 4e weapons, and are slightly less accurate. They all do 2dX damage, and are designed to work with powers that do half [W] damage in some circumstances. If you're using these...

    Easy-Go Classes for Beginners?

With the right power choices, I think the Wizard is actually the easiest PHB class--It doesn't have any special complicated mechanics like marking or quarry, or channel divinity. Just point your implement and boom! In PHB2, the sorcerer, for pretty much the same reason.

    Monster Builder Details 7/13

While I doubt they'll have the ability to add monsters to the database the way WotC will, There's likely nothing to prevent them from creating their own custom monsters with the program like any other user, and then including those files in a release. The 3PP would be providing an incentive for...

    [Star Wars] Out ESB...ESB???

In order to preserve secrecy, David Prouse gave the line "Luke, Obi-Wan Killed your father." in climactic ESB scene. "I am your father" was only added when James Earl Jones's voice was dubbed in. Imagine what the sequel would be like if the original line stayed intact? For the Star Wars game...

Name me a system: Modern Horror

Though perhaps Fear Itself might work better for your needs. Same basic system, but the skill list is simplified, and it adds some psychic powers. All of the GUMSHOE system offerings can be seen here

What do you consider "everything is core" to mean in your game?

I selected "all books expected to be permissable" over "GM chooses", but I honestly come down somewhere between the two. I guess, what core means to me is that If a GM is going to prohibit the Invoker or the Genasi or the Rutheless Ruffian rogue build, then it's as serious a decision as if he...
