    Source for the AD&D Lich?

One missing element is the phylactery. Where did this come in?

    FFG's Warhammer Fantasy Roleplay

Don't forget that the inverse is true, and Strength and Agility are added to weapon damage for melee and ranged attacks, respectively. Excepting big bads with super soak, monsters can usually take one hit per skull or so.

Classic Adventures Modules -- wishes and failures

Wishes: The one classic adventure I'd really like to play in is Masks of Nyarlathotep, from Call of Cthulhu. Failures: None so far. Here's hoping the trend continues.

    The 5-Room Dungeon

I've been using a similar model, which I've been calling the 3 room dungeon. Basically just: rooms 1, 2, and 4. Things like "red herrings" and "plot twists" aren't normally rooms in and of themselves, and aren't necessarily as common (well, within the dungeon. Normally the big plot twists...

From Gencon Events - "All D&D games at Gen Con being placed with RPGA"

Actually, that seems pretty cool to me. WotC seems to be offering some level of support, or at least affection, for previous editions. What's your objection, shemmy?

Origins Awards 2010 Nominations - Discuss!

Hmm. I learned that I have a few board and card games that I need to take a look at...

    Chain Stores And D&D

D&D book theft was a big enough problem at our local B&N that they moved all the books behind the counter. One of the local game stores buys used merchandise (and pays pretty nicely for like-new D&D hardcovers), so some unscrupulous folks were stealing from B&N and selling to the FLGS.

System that is gritty AND heroic?

WFRP3 The crits aren't always as dramatic as in previous editions (so instead of severed hand, you'll get a smashed hand), and they can be healed, but they're still reasonably common and are a big impediment.

    [setting help] Science fantasy races

I actually think the T'sa from Alternity/D20Future would be a better fit. Quick saurian creatures that are much closer to gearheads than the sesheyan. I don't remember whether they actually get statted as medium or small, but they've got that cheerful quirky nature associated with small races...

[?] Battlestar Galactica the board game

I assume the cylon player never officially revealed himself, which would let him keep on drawing and playing his full allotment of cards. For the right character, keeping everyone else in prison for a pretty significant length of time seems like a piece of cake. They probably would have...

    Dark Matter in New Orleans

It's spring break for the local college that half of my gaming group attends, which means I'm short a few players for my Dark•Matter game. Since one of the missing players is integral to the upcoming arc, I decided to pause the game and do something a little bit different with the remaining...

    Gifts for an Oracle

This is weirdly similar to a Dark•Matter adventure I recently ran. The party traveled to the shrine of the ancient masters to have their questions answered, and after passing challenges inspired by the elements, the party presented the masters with the traditional gifts given to alchemists: a...

Forked from Xmas Tree: Are Item Slots Necessary? [Any Edition]

Item slots are less about the effectiveness of balance, and more about the tolerability of balance. Their function is to present a simple in-game mechanism for what would otherwise be arbitrary balance. Balance could probably be achieved more effectively with rules like "Only two magic items...

What is THE classic dragon-hunting/slaying adventure?

I'm partial to DLA2: Dragon Knight It's a very sandboxy adventure that has the characters hunting down and destroying several dragons.

What 3.5 feats would you use to duplicate 4E's monster roles?

Haven't played 3e in a while, so I can't help much with feat specifics. But reading this thread, there are a few places where role description are lacking: 1) On "Are rogues lurkers or skirmishers"--either one. Rogues that stealth are lurkers--Rogues that flank are skirmishers. 2) There's an...

Help me make WotC adventures better.

I haven't read many of your more recent adventures, so much of this criticism may be out of date, but: As I see it, WotC adventures have two major problems: Pacing, and Theme. Pacing: Look at the map of an adventure from twenty years ago--It looks quite similar to the maps you're putting out...

How do you spice up your orcs?

A half-orc might also make a good BBEG--With a human's insight and ambition and an orc's brutality, he presents a greater threat than any orc or human alone ever could.

How do you spice up your orcs?

on "honorable, but evil": I think the "Knights that treat peasants like crap" is a dead end. Most of the "honorable" in these sorts of situations is based on social class. But the orc archetype is overwhelmingly lower class, which makes them a poor choice for those sorts of antagonist. For...

what are the ramifications of points-of-light?

Yes. Which matches the medieval society than D&D is loosely based on. Most people never strayed more than 20 miles from their birthplace. No, because cities do not have the farming capacity to support themselves--their food must be imported. In PoL, where transporting goods is much harder...

    Co-op game recommendations

Betrayal at House on the Hill is apparently being brought back into print soon. Which is nice, because I've always wanted to play but the $200 out of print pricetag has kept me away.
