When and what game did you start with.

1980. War Games Club at high school. D&D, Gamma World, Traveller little black books (solo), Champions, Starfire (solo), Star Fleet Battles, Boot Hill (once or twice), Star Frontiers (once or twice), Squad Leader (once), Guns of August (once), Rise and Fall of the Third Reich (once) - in no...

    Babylon Who

If he can get control of the writing, moving away from IRL concerns and towards Doctor concerns, he - or whoever - would have a better chance with the series. In the last three years, I have only heard about two episodes I would want to see as recurring reruns: the Giant Spiders and Rosa...

D&D 5E (2014) What would you want to see in a hypothetical 5e Kaldheim Campaign Setting Book?

Viking-themed? Expand the Cold Weather rules a bit using 3e Frostburn for inspiration. Include hypothermia (freezing, on land or in water) Swimming - and drowning, for when you try to swim but fail Ship combat and carrying capacity rules. Sure I "found" all this fancy stuff - can I get it all...

    D&D 5E (2014) Which played-out D&D trope needs to die?

Trope to be slain: Having an LG Paladin in the party places an obligation on the DM to manufacture moral conundrum after moral conundrum that the Paladin will auto-fail no matter his choice or action ("Gotcha!").

    D&D 5E (2014) Which played-out D&D trope needs to die?

After you kill the evil leader, you discover his Grand Vizier ("power behind the throne" guy) is the real BBEG; he now knows your tactics and resources and prepares accordingly.

    D&D 5E (2014) Which played-out D&D trope needs to die?

The Ranger with Outlander background, favored terrain: the area around here, and trained in Survival ... who keeps rolling 1s and 2s on his "condense the overland travel so we can get to the next Important Location" rolls. Why does he get lost on the road only when the other PCs are around and...

Favorite line or dialogue in comic book or comic book movie/show?

Thor comic, probably early-to-mid 1980s. Odin, Thor, and Loki are facing off against Surtur at the gates of Asgard. Odin gives an inspiring speech and the Asgardians attack in the name of what they value most. Odin: "For Asgard !" Thor: "For Midgard* !" Loki: "For myself !" * Earth

    D&D and the rising pandemic

I wonder if an effective treatment (to at least make you safe to be around, for say the time it takes to get into a doctor's office) could be improvised by using Listerine in a vaporizer, to create the fumes that clear your nose.

    D&D and the rising pandemic

I won't tell the whole story here (too much set-up) but a family member of mine was told to open the liquor storage "closet" at work one Monday morning and see what that reeking liquid coming under the door was ... Several cases of gin had fallen over and shattered. Sometime over the weekend...

    D&D and the rising pandemic

Proven true a while back: gargling with Listerine (which has diluted alcohol) meant you had no COVID in your mouth / breath afterwards. I never did hear how fast the virii return, though. And IMHO Listerine tastes better than beer (except original-flavor Listerine, which is tied with Pabst Blue...

Questions about what certain signifiers (strikethrough etc) mean?

    1. Not necessarily banned but maybe the user asked for the account to be closed. I have seen one individual who asked for his account to be closed and locked. And (I think) all posts removed; at any rate they are empty shells now.

The "I Didn't Comment in Another Thread" Thread

Not yet, but we could find a thread that is well on the way to being closed for its own problems and 'comment about not commenting elsewhere' there. We also could start two more 'didn't comment' threads and set up a round-robin for where you didn't say -whatever-.

Webbed Sphere, Inc. acquires long time game publisher Flying Buffalo, Inc.

Founders can bring in new talent, hire / contract an accountant and lawyer to get into professional shape, bring in a CEO with small-business experience. All that is growing pains. When investment firms buy out companies that provide goods & services to the real world, the firms' knowledge of...

    D&D 5E (2014) What size category is a locomotive?

The forklifts I was trained to drive were Large. About 4 feet wide: the sit-down lift was about 8 feet long; the stand-up lift had a 4 x 4 floor print. Both however had a tall mast; 10 feet high (and carefully check everything for clearance when crawling through doorways) for the stand-up, 6...

    Proxy Mini

One Saturday morning at Origins (during the 4e era) the DM used pieces of candy for the minions. One of the PCs was about 12 years old and his character would not leave this particular room with regenerating minions. The character was tracking down the player's breakfast.

    D&D 5E (2014) What size category is a locomotive?

A 35-ton diesel locomotive - legally too small to run on normal right-of-way with a train but useable by a factory to move individual cars back and forth within plant property - would be a little bigger than a UPS or Amazon delivery van. The standard distance between the rails in US is 4 ft 8...

D&D 5E (2014) Should I ask my DM to kill my D&D character?

I was DM'ing and one player told me he wanted to trade out his current character for another. The group was on a long boat trip, so I found a way to oblige: "Nessie" showed up and attacked the boat, trying to knock some munchies into the water. The player's character (along with most of the...

    D&D and the rising pandemic

I'm pretty sure Auto-correct got to that last word, but it does bring up the image of a bunch of deaf people at a specialized bar / concert venue using sign language to join in and accompany the band. 😊

D&D 5E (2014) How useful is the ritual 'Skywrite?'

If you and a friend know a language other than Common, write your message in the foreign tongue. Sure everybody and their brother can see it, but they cannot understand it. Even more effective if the writing systems do not share symbols (use hieroglyphics in a Roman alphabet region, for instance).
