I figured the point of the countdown was to simulate a time-sensitive situation when the actual time remaining is unknown, but I'm glad it's good for drama too I suppose.

Still an in-fiction amount of time, just one the PCs don't know every detail about. Happens in real life all the time.

I must be under a rock then, or you might be wrong about how wide-spread a concept that conforms to your preferences actually is. Who knows?

Level Up's description of countdowns is pretty darn trad, actually. I just read it and didn't see anything about adding tension, just a way to simulate a situation with an unknown time limit, some what abstractly.

D&D 5E (2024) Is There A New Sheriff in Town?

The funny thing is, I'm one of the people who wants innovative fixes for 5e, and 5.5 didn't go in a direction I want to go either.

Hard to say. Do we know whether or not the people would be burned if I had gotten into the house sooner? In any case, I do believe that the attempt itself to open the door is unconnected to any possible things that might happen on the other side of it. Opening the door and doing something on the...

D&D General Todd Kenreck Let Go from WotC

Yeah, stuff like that does nothing to dissuade me from the notion that they'd try to pass off so AI writing to save a few bucks in salary.

Worth the risk to make the line go up and serve their shareholder masters? Maybe so. Like you say, AI writing is harder to detect and harder to prove.

Yeah, like so many other things in the business world, publicly traded corporations are the problem.

Darn those terrible GMs! Anything less than a true democracy at the table right?

Actually using it would do that. Publicly announcing they are doing it will not.

Only if people find out and can prove it's AI work.

Again, the AI art thing is being deeply watched. They might be able to get away with some AI writing.

But possible benefit would there be for him to tell the public they were thinking of using AI as an output service?

Maybe, but a thing that saves them money and is easy to do is more likely to be done than a similar thing that saves them money but is being put under a judgemental microscope by the internet.

This is my Platonic Ideal of play (by which I mean, what I strive for as a DM but will never truly reach).

I'm not denying any of that. I am talking about my preference for how all these things are represented. The act of opening the door is represented by a die roll. That's all the die roll represents. All that other stuff is part of the setting and largely represented by GM and player interaction...

In the fiction, the PC may very well connect the two events (although they may very not be). In play, in regards to the action being taken, they absolutely are not.

I think it might be easier to get away with in writing than in art.

There are many game systems that one could call 5e. Pretending it's all one big tent doesn't seem worth the aggravation to me. Just explain what you mean, specifically.
