I deal with the historical availability of items by assigning each to a broad time period. That way, I can decide before the game begins what eras of item availability I want in that campaign deliberately. And of course, I'm happy to make adjustments when new information becomes available. This...

This why I preferred TSR's monster entries, particularly 2e's work. They didn't assume the only thing that mattered was combat.

I'm with you on buying stuff you think is good. That's why I stopped giving WotC money. They stopped making products I wanted. When I buy an RPG book, it's because it has stuff in it I can use, and is close enough to my preferences that I don't feel I need to make a lot of changes.

It's a pretty straightforward narrative "played" using the AD&D 1st edition system (which itself certainly has death rules).

MHP's Necromancer pre-5.5 make-over (with the necromancy unchained sidebar active) meets my needs and was a commercial product.

Except is based on game rules, and not being affected by social mechanics is based on PC fiat (that was fun to say).

Then make it a not-house rule if your concern is commercial viability. Or, you know, houserule your game. Your game at your table is the important thing. No one here works for WotC after all, as far as I know.
