What name would you like the next iteration of D&D to bear?

Names like "D&D Final" and "D&D Ultimate" are tricky. What happens, say, 10-15 years later, when "D&D Final" becomes all bloated and outdated and the core and supplements need be updated again with rules errata, consolidation, etc -- would that next iteration be called "D&D Final Ultimate This...

    Legends & Lore 16 Jan 2012

I wondered exactly the same thing. I assume that conflicting playstyles is still a social contract. Ideally, you play with like-minded players and DM. However, if there's only one gaming group in town, or if you really just want to play with your best friends only, then at least the system...

The Miracle of the Thing, and the real Miracle-Man

I was editing the post at the same you replied, and yes, it does seem to lead to that. The thing is, with clerical magic, there must be some sort of process, it's just that the priest doesn't know what it is. But we're playing a game with rules -- and so unless you give the DM to make godly...

The Miracle of the Thing, and the real Miracle-Man

Perhaps with arcane magic, the wizard knows how arcane magic works but not why. The cleric knows why clerical magic works but not how. Say a wizard creates magic by visualizing a rune in his mind's eye while simultaneously uttering a word with precise intonation -- he has no idea why this...

    Legends & Lore 16 Jan 2012

The emphasis of D&DN seems to be the story, and that rules shouldn't get in the way of the story that the group wants. I know for sure that the universal story of D&D is heroes going on adventures, but is the universal story of D&D that "sneak attack" always works on all undead or never works on...

    Civility

I understand that there was a study done in which a few pieces of garbage in a public space results in more and more litter being dropped over time. I guess people who see a bunch of garbage lying around assume it's normalized and are less likely to hesitate to drop their own litter. Bad...

Why we need Warlords in D&DN

All PCs soak up an unrealistic amount of damage -- if you fluff hp as physical stamina equal to that of 4 horses. Any demand that standard Fighters be magical or divine in order to suspend disbelief would then apply to all/most classes (or any PCs with a double digit hp). I understand that some...

Why we need Warlords in D&DN

Hmm, so out of curiousity, what is it that makes something like the avenger palatable even though forced to use the divine power source but find it unpalatable if the warlord was not martial power sourced?

Why we need Warlords in D&DN

And how does applying a 4E warlord class suit her any better? From 1st level, Laurana was not fulfilling a Leader Combat role whatsoever or using any warlord powers. Afterwards, you've provided some examples of diplomacy and acts of valor that could be accomplished by any class. I don't see...

Why we need Warlords in D&DN

Since when was it mainstream to choose a class that supports a personality growth like that?? Plus dragonlance rules came before 4E, so Laura was some sort of class that wasn't a warlord and she did just fine that way.

Why we need Warlords in D&DN

That's a leader, not a Leader combat role. Any character class could do those things you describe.

Why we need Warlords in D&DN

Laurana was a diplomat. She wasn't being warlordy during battle. She was concerned about her own fighting and just surviving and not getting killed. She never paid attention to her comrades in battle.

Why we need Warlords in D&DN

See upthread. It's not about me playing the warlord. It's about another player playing a mundane warlord. Or a bard insulting skeletons to death. etc.

Why we need Warlords in D&DN

I understand where you're coming from. I hope you likewise then understand where I'm coming from that this might mean that rules like warlords and other contentious points that aren't tweaked one way or another to be less contentious might not make the cut into a "default"/core 5E -- which I...

Why we need Warlords in D&DN

Ironically, upthread, someone else specifically said that Tanis was a leader (of the party) but not a Leader (metagame), so thus NOT a warlord. And Knights of the Rose were mechanically knight classes. Sturm Brightblade was glum and uninspiring, so not a warlord. There are no warlord IMO in...

Why we need Warlords in D&DN

Perhaps I didn't explain properly. The rules are the same or in the spirit of the 4E warlord. It's not a fighter/cleric hybrid or multiclass. It's still the Warlord class, but fluffed as divine Lord of War. Thus no mundane Warlords.

Bring Back Verisimilitude, add in More Excitement!

I suspect that more likely than not, the other people are not imagining it all, or just shallowly, or their tolerance limits are high, or their expectations are low. Then there's a very small minority, I think, that is actually more imaginative and creative and genuinely is able to imagine...

Why we need Warlords in D&DN

I have a question. Nobody AFAIK has a problem with class-specific flavor/fluff like with Warlock pacts and Avengers. So if you love Warlords, and you wanted them to be in the 5E core or just be less contentious, would you compromise or tolerate a Warlord that was fluffed in a way that was more...
