D&D General Modules with a political message?

On some level I do not see how it can be avoided. Every game I run and every setting I create will at least somewhat reflect my understanding of how the world works which will inherently reflect my beliefs. That does not of course mean there's overt or intentional messaging. I cannot believe...

Cypher System by Monte Cook Games: what do you think about it?

As I understand the Cypher System if a player at their Cypher limit doesn't use a given Cypher the appearance of a new Cypher presents that player with the choice of either giving up the Cypher they haven't used or giving up the ability to pick up the new one. Whether you see that as a...

Is Immersion Important to You as a Player?

I can live with different descriptors. It's really claiming that one is universally a higher goal or better play than another that's sand in my gears.

D&D 5E (2014) Regarding DMG, Starter Set and Essentials kit: Are they good for the starting DMs?

There's a reasonable argument that every other TRPG can operate under the presumption everyone coming to them has at least tried D&D. There's another argument that some other TRPGs are built for playstyles that extremely difficult if not impossible to replicate in D&D. From what I have seen...

Is Immersion Important to You as a Player?

I do not for a nanosecond doubt that people have that experience and/or reaction. In particular you. I hope I didn't convey doubt about that. I might not prefer it for myself but that means exactly and only that.

Is Immersion Important to You as a Player?

That does sound really intense. More intense than I'd prefer if I'm honest. LARPing isn't a thing I have any first-hand knowledge of but isn't that kind of experience at least in the expected range?

Is Immersion Important to You as a Player?

It might be useful to break down what different people mean by "immersion" and how different people experience what they call "immersion" but I do not see how anything good or positive can come from trying to say one type of immersion is better than another or denying that something some people...

    D&D 5E (2014) Much ado about a little something?

Looking purely at hit point totals yes the difference is overblown. I think if I were going to be drawing fire I would prefer to be a paladin than a cleric but that's more about other edge-case type things.

D&D 5E (2014) Regarding DMG, Starter Set and Essentials kit: Are they good for the starting DMs?

A couple of things. My disagreement with you does not mean I doubt your competence. I gather you've had the same group coming back for years which is not something to belittle. Do not sell yourself short on that account. It sounds as though you are saying the DMG is useful to people who know...

D&D 5E (2014) Regarding DMG, Starter Set and Essentials kit: Are they good for the starting DMs?

How prescriptive prior editions were might be debatable but having a default expectation as to style has the advantage that instruction is possible. I might like the new book to pick one or two most-popular approaches and give how-tos for those. Then talk about how to get from those to other...

D&D 5E (2014) Regarding DMG, Starter Set and Essentials kit: Are they good for the starting DMs?

You probably won't believe it but I don't think the book is much less horrible than you do. I think it's written much more for people with experience of past editions and could be changed to better suit the majority of new DMs coming to the game without that experience. I think much of the...

D&D 5E (2014) Regarding DMG, Starter Set and Essentials kit: Are they good for the starting DMs?

This is what I'd want the DMG to contain and it's what I find most lacking in the current version of it.

D&D 5E (2014) Regarding DMG, Starter Set and Essentials kit: Are they good for the starting DMs?

I've tried that argument. Apparently in this context "guide" means "reference manual." That wouldn't have been my choice.

D&D 5E (2014) Regarding DMG, Starter Set and Essentials kit: Are they good for the starting DMs?

I agree we are past any point of reasonable discussion. As to who's just repeating "nah uh" and who's being a troll ... 🤷‍♂️

D&D 5E (2014) Regarding DMG, Starter Set and Essentials kit: Are they good for the starting DMs?

For all that guidance there's really not a lot of instruction in it is there?

D&D 5E (2014) Regarding DMG, Starter Set and Essentials kit: Are they good for the starting DMs?

You don't think "guidance" includes any sort instruction then? Well huh.

D&D 5E (2014) Regarding DMG, Starter Set and Essentials kit: Are they good for the starting DMs?

Fair. It says it "provides the inspiration and guidance you need." There's a difference of opinion on how much guidance is needed.

D&D 5E (2014) Regarding DMG, Starter Set and Essentials kit: Are they good for the starting DMs?

Been through this. The back of the book says it has everything the DM needs. It's arguable that a new DM need instruction or a tutorial and there's little if any of that to be found.

D&D 5E (2014) Regarding DMG, Starter Set and Essentials kit: Are they good for the starting DMs?

It can be better. They can write it with DMs new to the game more in mind. They can reorganize it so for instance guidance on running the game comes before guidance on making your setting. They can add more advice or reframe the advice already there to point at different ways to play the game.
