D&D 5E (2014) Regarding DMG, Starter Set and Essentials kit: Are they good for the starting DMs?

Or people do read the DMG and think it's not enough.

Is Immersion Important to You as a Player?

Maybe if someone says they are "immersed" or "inhabiting their character" it isn't a good idea to tell them they aren't.

There was a glitch and you somehow ended up quoting me instead of @pemerton here.

D&D 5E (2014) Regarding DMG, Starter Set and Essentials kit: Are they good for the starting DMs?

Those would indeed be improvements to the books that would make them more accessible and approachable from the POV of someone new to the game.

D&D 5E (2014) Regarding DMG, Starter Set and Essentials kit: Are they good for the starting DMs?

I have only seen the inside of the original Starter Set with Lost Mine of Phandelver. It is a fine starter set for people who've played prior editions of the game but it is less accessible or approachable for people who haven't. This is true for all the corebooks for 5e which is why the...

D&D 5E (2014) Regarding DMG, Starter Set and Essentials kit: Are they good for the starting DMs?

No one who breathes exists in a vacuum. A starter set with pregenerated characters is a fine way to get people around a table of newbies playing D&D quickly. I am not convinced it's the best way or the only way for people new to the game to learn the game and I would like to see the corebooks...

D&D 5E (2014) Regarding DMG, Starter Set and Essentials kit: Are they good for the starting DMs?

But we cannot have more than 320 pages in the book. This commandment has come down from on high!

D&D 5E (2014) Regarding DMG, Starter Set and Essentials kit: Are they good for the starting DMs?

Is there any reason they should not explicitly include someone who has never played the game in the target audience for the DMG? Is there any reason there should not be any tutorial in the book at all? After all the book does say it includes everything the DM needs. It does not say it includes...

D&D 5E (2014) Regarding DMG, Starter Set and Essentials kit: Are they good for the starting DMs?

It's written more with someone new to the edition in mind than someone new to the game let alone someone new to the hobby. D&D is the game someone new to the hobby is most likely to play first so it seems reasonable to acknowledge that in the rulebooks. I see no reason not to include actual...

D&D 5E (2014) Regarding DMG, Starter Set and Essentials kit: Are they good for the starting DMs?

From where I sit those that disagree with you are advocating that "all the resources available" include a Dungeon Master's Guide written at least in part with the new DM in mind.

D&D 5E (2014) Regarding DMG, Starter Set and Essentials kit: Are they good for the starting DMs?

Can the DM weave legendary stories without knowing how to play the game?

Because they must figure it out for themselves the way we did.

D&D 5E (2014) Regarding DMG, Starter Set and Essentials kit: Are they good for the starting DMs?

So leaving aside the overly-flowery descriptive prose you don't think instruction is part of "everything a DM needs" especially if the DM is new?

D&D 5E (2014) Regarding DMG, Starter Set and Essentials kit: Are they good for the starting DMs?

I think the more experienced a DM is the more likely they are to be looking for something specific when they open the DMG. Presuming they're not looking for the treasure tables and magic items list though those might count as specific.

D&D 5E (2014) Regarding DMG, Starter Set and Essentials kit: Are they good for the starting DMs?

I sincerely didn't intend to be obscure so I will unpack the metaphor. One of the first pieces I learned when I took piano lessons as a kid was the melody from Beethoven's "Ode to Joy" from his Ninth Symphony. As it happens the basic melody for that can be played almost entirely on one hand...

D&D 5E (2014) Regarding DMG, Starter Set and Essentials kit: Are they good for the starting DMs?

Just because your piano teacher starts with Beethoven doesn't mean she doesn't want you to play Joplin.

D&D 5E (2014) Regarding DMG, Starter Set and Essentials kit: Are they good for the starting DMs?

How can the basic how-to be interpreted as One True Way when it specifically includes introductions to many different ways? I don't think the possibility of willful misinterpretation should preclude the inclusion of actual useful instruction.

D&D 5E (2014) Regarding DMG, Starter Set and Essentials kit: Are they good for the starting DMs?

What seems like the crux to me is that some people think "basic how-to" automatically means insistence on One True Way and others think "basic how-to" inherently includes introductions to many possible ways.

D&D 5E (2014) Regarding DMG, Starter Set and Essentials kit: Are they good for the starting DMs?

The basics people are thinking would be useful for new DMs aren't just rules. Do you think there are basics about "How to DM" that are generally applicable? Or do you think anything that sets out to answer "how" will inevitably specify an end goal? Is there something in learning to DM that is...
