D&D General Why the resistance to D&D being a game?

Yes. "Chips" is the correct word.

D&D General Why the resistance to D&D being a game?

I didn't say "boring." I said "I didn't find them fun." On the contrary just about every time I see any GM complaining about "exploits" or "the players thinking they're limited to what's on their character sheets" it seems as though the GM is complaining about the players using the rules to...

D&D General Why the resistance to D&D being a game?

I don't think "good game design" correlates 100% with "fun." I certainly have encountered games I thought were well-designed that I didn't think were fun.

D&D General Why the resistance to D&D being a game?

I don't think it does. I also tend to think that if the players around the table talk about "fighters" or "warlocks" that there are in-world parallels the characters could plausibly be talking about.

D&D General Why the resistance to D&D being a game?

Because there are people who object to the players being able to use the rules to make decisions. Lots of play that gets denigrated as "gamish" seems to me as though it's basically "the player knows the rules and uses them."

D&D General A defense of illusionism

I was referring strictly to acquiring basic items like ropes and shovels. Referring to the rules for a price isn't illusionist play. Referring to the GM's notes to see if they're available plausibly likewise isn't though that will depend on the extent of the notes. Flat deciding the matter...

D&D General A defense of illusionism

Seems to me as though there's a difference in the types of play you're describing in this paragraph. I'd think that "because the rules say a thing has a set price it is therefore available almost anywhere" isn't "on some basis that isn't evident to the players." I'd think that a deciding on some...

D&D General What is player agency to you?

With respect I think most people would look at most cases in the areas you're talking about and be able to point at which person was kinder or more intelligent or which event left more of a mark on history. The quibbly edge cases you and others are clinging to to pretend otherwise seem to me...

D&D General What is player agency to you?

So you think you need perfect situational awareness to make any value judgment? That's an interesting position.

D&D General What is player agency to you?

People have been debating morals and ethics for much much longer than they have been debating TRPGs. Mostly because they've been trying to intellectualize what people do more or less instinctively and partly because they believe what is specific should be general and the other way around.

D&D General What is player agency to you?

Over a long term general-you will likely be able to discern the differences between those things and actual kindness and roughly no one would call the possibilities you listed "kind."

    Sex at the Table

So you're saying your table is at least something like a beach? Cool!

D&D General What is player agency to you?

You really cannot tell if one person is kinder than another? You really cannot tell if one person is more intelligent than another? You can take that as "better at a given intellectual task" if you want to avoid debating the existence of general intelligence. You really cannot tell which...

D&D General What is player agency to you?

It seems as though the players' reactions might be similar to readers' or viewers' reactions to "it was just a dream" both in terms of how they react and why.

D&D General What is an RPG and is D&D an RPG?

I am leery of this position because it leads to the idea that one can make Monopoly a TRPG by playing it as one. I am inclined to think design intent trumps play intent here but I am reluctant to say you must have both if only because different people and different tables will consider differing...

D&D General What is an RPG and is D&D an RPG?

This is most of why I'm willing to consider whether the author/publisher think they've made a TRPG. The option to play something intended as a TRPG in a way that arguably isn't TRPG play doesn't make it not a TRPG. The option to play something not intended as a TRPG in a way that at least looks...

D&D General What is an RPG and is D&D an RPG?

I think players of TRPGs tend to identify with their characters in ways that perhaps point at the distinction. They tend to have a good deal of choice in terms of what and who those characters are and they tend to have more choice in terms of those characters' actions and goals.

D&D General What is an RPG and is D&D an RPG?

My point is that the fighter isn't Bob. Even if it's a game where the PC is explicitly modeled on the player the character isn't the player.

D&D General What is an RPG and is D&D an RPG?

I would think that the character in the game would diverge from the real person and that it would probably happen pretty rapidly.

    Sex at the Table

More seriously sex is a thing that happens in the worlds I run in. Most of the cities in my D&D settings have legal brothels and characters in my games have sex and talk about sex and care about sex. The extent to which player characters do those things is up to the players.
