What Games do you think are Neotrad?

I don't think any format is really perfect for every person, the most I can say is that I've seen them work well with enough different people, there's certainly something to be said for siloing the knowledge to create the sense of archaeology you can get from uncovering something you don't have...

You've Created A Bad Character. How, why and whose fault is it?

Its the fault of both the player and the designer, the designer should do their utmost to create a game where as many builds as possible are viable, but the player should do their utmost to design and play a character they'll have fun with.

What Games do you think are Neotrad?

One key is that you don't need the same person to wear the same hat each time it needs to be worn, the rules adjudication can be the entire table running to the book or taking a quick vote or simply being like "I decided last time, we'll do what Timmy says this time" scenario designer can be...

What Games do you think are Neotrad?

My experience is that this doesn't hold up in practice, if it did my message-board RP days would have had static, centralized, Game Masters and they almost never did-- if no one expects to look at a Game Master for content, then the responsibility simply diffuses to everyone, and pools a bit on...

What Games do you think are Neotrad?

So I think a big recurring theme here is that Aside from the implicitly insulting tone, and dismissive mien, and regardless of how VTM in the particular presented it, the reality is that play groups tend to want to use the rules-- just not all the rules, and the unused rules aren't the same...

What Games do you think are Neotrad?

I think the choice to see things that way is where the Story Now movement crystallizes it's ethos, whereas I think the choice to see things Brennan's way is the crystallization of the Neotrad ethos, at least in so far as my thinking vis a vis negative space is concerned.

What Games do you think are Neotrad?

https://www.polygon.com/24105875/worlds-beyond-number-narrative-style-adventure I'm describing how the movement see's TTRPGs, not an intrinsic categorization of the games themselves.

What Games do you think are Neotrad?

Yesn't, in the sense that you are completely correct about it being very common, and those people playing in (something approaching) that style, its largely been conflated with trad until recently, and largely rejected by the Story Now movement (which does raise some Chomskyish concerns for me...

Paradox kills Chronicles of Darkness with The Hedge being the last Changeling the Lost book

None More Dark publishes things and is made up of a bunch of the game's designers, they're planning to continue supporting at least some of the COFD gamelines, from what they've said. Their material is excellent too, and they just released the Book of Seemings for Changeling super recently.

Ben Riggs: 'The Golden Age of TTRPGs is Dead'

The relationship presumably isn't with the company, its with the thing itself.

What makes a "bad GM" or a "bad player"?

A lot of what makes a bad player is just the stress that they put on me, in all honesty. It can have a lot of different sources, but a bad player burns out a GM and reduces their energy levels and excitement when they run a game, and likely has a similar effect on the other players too.

Pathfinder 2E Archives of Nethys Remaster Update

Its just so darn good, you can flip between two versions of the same spell to see how it changed-- like how Divine Immolation changed from Flame Strike, and I just noticed that they buffed Shadow Blast, and they really went hard to make sure they identified everything Paizo intended as a...

    D&D General The Alexandrian’s Insights In a Nutshell [+]

My take on the supposed contradiction between Don't Prep Plots and Three Clue Rule, is that Three Clue Rule is arguably value neutral in regards to Don't Prep Plots. There's an obvious throughline where you could bludgeon the players with the three clues to ensure they get at least one of them...

D&D General Who “owns” a PC after the player stops using them?

Both the Gm and the player, the player is welcome to bring them to someone else's game, but an instance of them remains a part of my world, and therefore under my purview.

Pathfinder 2E Pathfinder Lost Omens Tian Xia Character Guide

It is indeed very exciting, I'm personally excited for the additions of Tanuki, Samsara and Wayang, and I've got players thrilled with the Starlight Sentinel.

    Who Decides What You Play?

Usually I drive everything as GM, but not only do I only start pushing for us to try something only once I see that it has something for everyone in the group, I tend to get some of them excited for the idea before I actually propose playing it. This actually came up kind of recently when one...

D&D 5E (2014) [+]Exploration Falls Short For Many Groups, Let’s Talk About It

I largely consider exploration to be chiefly concerned with information rather than travel, good exploration content rewards putting together different pieces of information in ways the players can use and their ability to gather that information in the first place. Information in this instance...

"Oddities" in fantasy settings - the case against "consistency"

I kinda wanna push back on this, talking doesn't really accomplish anything, when you talk positions are stated-- the give and take of negotiation, the system of values each person has about what's fair for them to give up and why, those things are all much more relevant than talking, and that...

"Oddities" in fantasy settings - the case against "consistency"

I think there's a very big difference between "This is a story in which magic is outlawed/wiped out" and "This is a story where one of the main characters is the last mage" because the latter brings the focus back to the magic wielding protagonist, whereas the former is designed to bring focus...
