What Does the RPG Hobby Need Now?

That's called the Internet. Gaming online, I have never had an issue finding plenty of motivated, like-minded gamers. Embrace the 21st Century.

What does it take for an RPG to die?

The cover art is great. Other than illustrations of gear and monsters, RM has traditionally not wasted much space on art.

What does it take for an RPG to die?

The cover art is what sells, and RMU is first-rate in that regard. Since they are pdf-intensive, that's all they need.

What does it take for an RPG to die?

The most recent: RM United. They have retained the RM goodness, while trimming away the excess; for instance, cutting armor classes down from 20 to 10. That made the charts a lot easier to read, and cost the game nothing, as the variety of PC armor is barely ten.

What Does the RPG Hobby Need Now?

Your first mistake is assuming everyone plays D&D. The second is to think that everyone wants collaborative stories in a fantasy world. There is no 'one size fits all'. A lot of new players come to TTRPGs with inspiration from video games or tv/movies, and they just want to kill stuff and gain...

ZWEIHÄNDER Reforged: Talking With Daniel D. Fox (World of Game Design)

I am always a joy to be around, so much so that I live in the country to avoid people flocking around in droves. Although b@stards still try to use my dock. But I have special loathing for BoL and similar systems.

ZWEIHÄNDER Reforged: Talking With Daniel D. Fox (World of Game Design)

Let's put it this way: the ability to inflict Grievous wounds is not worth the cost and weight of a Zweihander. And unlike a five-foot-sword, a sharpened spoon is easy to hide. The simple fact is that there is too little range between said sharpened spoon, and the largest melee weapon. Even...

In-person Game cancelled. What do you play?

Probably go spend time with my wife, or mow. I live on sizeable acreage, so that's always an option.

ZWEIHÄNDER Reforged: Talking With Daniel D. Fox (World of Game Design)

Nope. Its a ripoff, plain and simple. There's a little fluff, and the FoF rules, but that's it. If anything, its lost a good bit of the grimdark that made it so impressive when it first came out. The sad thing is, it had the potential to be great; I've used it in both fantasy and a 40k clone...

ZWEIHÄNDER Reforged: Talking With Daniel D. Fox (World of Game Design)

I've GM'd over a hundred sessions of Zwei. Without the alternative rules, there's really no effective difference between a sharpened spoon (shiv) and a zweihander. Even with the optional rules, the system is still limited. Have no opinion on the author other than the quality of his work, which...

Worlds Largest Dungeon Holds 'Secret Doors' Contest

Yeah, we are diametrically opposed on that issue.

Worlds Largest Dungeon Holds 'Secret Doors' Contest

At no point in history has that phrase ever been true.

ZWEIHÄNDER Reforged: Talking With Daniel D. Fox (World of Game Design)

Its not a new book. Its the same old book with errata and a couple tweaks introduced n Flames of Freedom. Basically, its a 'new edition' scam.

ZWEIHÄNDER Reforged: Talking With Daniel D. Fox (World of Game Design)

Yeah, its just errata and a few tweaks from Flames of Freedom. Not worth buying.

ZWEIHÄNDER Reforged: Talking With Daniel D. Fox (World of Game Design)

All it is, is the changes introduced in Flames of Freedom. The weapons are still, essentially, all identical. The original book and later Main gauche had rules to introduce greater variety in weapon results, so a homemade shiv did not do the same damage as a zweihander, But instead, we get...

ZWEIHÄNDER Reforged: Talking With Daniel D. Fox (World of Game Design)

Zwei has not matured well; the new edition is hardly much more than 'errata added', and the damage system still has not been upgraded to Main Gauche. I used Zwei and FoF for several years, but I've since dropped them as its clear there's no interest in cleaning up the system. Plus, I think he...

How do you handle gems as a GM?

I quit using gems decades ago. It was just extra bookkeeping without adding anything.

For those who don't play D&D (or its clones), what keeps you engaged with EN World?

This sub-forum. This is literally the only place on-site I go. For example, in the last couple weeks I learned that the CSIO is being released, and the thread on city products was quite useful. Its also been helpful for posting questions pertaining to my campaigns, as I am pretty certain none...
