Once you go C&C, you never go back

If your looking for 3E light, this is it (so a good game for 3Eers I suppose, not so for AD&D/OD&D fans). The artwork and editing are horrible, I wouldn't advise anyone looking for an old school game to get this system (stick with the originals or download OSRIC if you don't have them).

    What DON'T you like about 1E AD&D?

What was missing most from the DMG (and AD&D) were good examples of combat that spell things out. Many of the rules aren't as bad as people think once understood and actually used.

In AD&D, do you prefer being DM or player (most of the time)?

If I had to choose between one or the other I'd go with player (just barely). DMing is great in 1E, but I really enjoy seeing the world threw my character and reacting to it. That is with the assumption that I sat with a really good DM of course. ;)

    What DON'T you like about 1E AD&D?

That is the big difference, isn't it; back then there was no RIGHT OR WRONG, not only because the players (who hadn't read the DMG) didn't have a clue what was going on, or that Gygax said its up to the DM in the rules but because most of the core rules were written so screwy no one could...

    What DON'T you like about 1E AD&D?

Depends on the group. We had a really good DM and begged the guy not to stop. I took over as DM not by choice but as a last resort (and I wasn't as good). ANd as much as I love DMing and testing my players in a world I make up, I really miss the old days when I didn't understand the rules...

    Gygax on initiative

To avoid thread jacking another thread in a response to Storm Raven, I'm starting a new thread here. This is what Gygax had to say about his BTB understanding of how initiative is supposed to work in 1E (including spell use) posted a few years ago at DF. Anonymous wrote: Thanks Gary, A few...

    What DON'T you like about 1E AD&D?

Good comparison, and a great idea with the red binder. I need to put together my notes and do something like that.

    What DON'T you like about 1E AD&D?

No, once again, I claimed that the rules suggest the players do not read the DMG, only the DM does so. If our group had stopped playing in 2 years then we would have only had 1 DM. It just so happens we've been playing off and on for 25+ years, so all of us have been DM. I never made that...

what to do if you gave too much power?

Unless its really idiotic (and ruining the game) I let the player keep it and just let the situation play out, they usually get cocky and end up dead first (initially throw in some more challanging encounters to keep the game fun and let the guy use his mega magic for a while). Part of the fun...

    What DON'T you like about 1E AD&D?

Hussar, as I stated on that thread, if you've been playing this game for 20+ years you would expect every member of the group to have DMed (and thus had the rules explained to them or read (in part or in whole) the DMG). We even forced players to DM who had no desire to because we wanted some...

Was there only one DM at your table?

If you go back and read my posts you will see I only claimed one thing: that the directions of AD&D suggest the players only read the PH (not the DMG or MM) so that the game experiance is not ruined for them. Only at the time when someone is ready to actually start DMing do you show them the...

Was there only one DM at your table?

Its only natural to have more DMs as time went on (esp. after 25 years). THis question should really break it down into time periods. When we first started playing (years 0-2) 1 DM Years 2-3 2 rotating DMs Years 3-6 3 rotating DMs (one retired). Year 7 and beyond (at that point everyone in...

    What DON'T you like about 1E AD&D?

Foster brings up a good point too, the players who also DM are supposed to abide by a code, allow the DM to DM by his own methods and interpretations, and to focus on being a player (stay on your side of the fence). When I'm a player I try to forget what I know and just adventure, its just more...

    What DON'T you like about 1E AD&D?

Storm, I think were coming from different places. We only had the 3 core books for 3 or 4 years (making our own dungeons) and we didn't mess with reading Dragon, nor have I ever attended a GEN CON. I imagine most players were like me (the average D&D player in 79-81) you may have been more...

    What DON'T you like about 1E AD&D?

Dragon is not part of the core rules. The DMG says the player sticks to the PH.

What DO you like about 1E AD&D

The greatest strength of this system IMO was the "setting focus" and the lack of hard and fast rules to determine every situation. By leaving this up to the DM (with only suggestions by the author) it made it difficult for the players to know their chances to do things (this decreased the rules...

    What DON'T you like about 1E AD&D?

What ever Storm Raven. Your logic is lacking: In the first place, when you first purchased these books (back in the 70s or early 80s) you didn't have the internet, and you didn't have a detailed history of the creation of D&D at your fingertips (perhaps a crystal ball?). All you new was what...

    What DON'T you like about 1E AD&D?

Guys, my point is that in AD&D the rules were not written to be exposed to the players, only the DM. Thats the opposite in 3E. Clearly if Gygax had wanted the players from the get go to read teh DMG he would have suggested it. Instead he suggested the opposite. The fact that you couldn't...

    What DON'T you like about 1E AD&D?

No a fighter kills with his sword all the time. A 12th level fighter knows he can probably take 12 wolves from experiance and the confidence in his training, the unpredictable nature of wolves could be a problem, but he's probably delt with them many times before. A 12th level fighter may have...

    What DON'T you like about 1E AD&D?

Try it. Walk up to a half way decent climbing tree and guess how quickly you can do it, and how many times you have to restart. Then attempt. Most people find its not as easy as it looks. Yet, under stress people can sometimes do amazing things. There are plenty of stories of out of shape...
