Dealing With Bloat - Feat Deprecation

I'm of the mind that Expertise feats are simply math fixes, and should not have been feats in the first place, so that first caveat doesn't worry me. What I was contemplating was stripping out all expertise feats, and putting the following two in; Expertise Benefit: You gain a +1 feat bonus to...

    Is this WotC's pipe dream?

If 5e continues in its current apparent direction, I will stick with 4e. It has a few good ideas - primarily, I'm contemplating how to rejigger 4e's skill system to work like the playtest's, and I like the race-class-background-theme setup - but unless there are some major changes over the...

Dealing With Bloat - Feat Deprecation

I'm getting ready to start on a pretty big project - namely, go through every 4e book, most DDI articles, and a few 3PP books and create a database/index of everything, with a UI. Basically, future-proof 4e for myself by making a Compendium of my own. One of the things I plan to do is to take...

    D&D 4E Would you still play 4e?

I've subbed for DDI since it was available, but only for the compendium and the articles; I have never used any of the other digital tools. While I can't see into the future, it looks like 4e is going to remain my system of choice going forward. My plan currently is to design my own...

Elephant in the room: rogue and fighter dailies.

Yeah, basing the narrative on the results has nothing to do with whether you use meta resources or not. Either way, when the mechanics are all resolved, you describe the results narratively.

Elephant in the room: rogue and fighter dailies.

It's not as if the guy stands stock still while a bunch of people move up to try and trip him. By the time it gets to someone else's turn, the circumstances have changed - maybe he stumbled, maybe he shifted his footing, maybe the PC just landed a more solid blow. This isn't rocket surgery, people.

Elephant in the room: rogue and fighter dailies.

Martial dailies aren't "I have this one cool trick, but for some unknown reason I can only use it once per extended rest"; they're "There's this one cool trick I know, but it's hard to pull off. I need just the right opportunity for it to work". It's just that the player - not the character -...

So the playtest is out: What do you think? The EN World poll!

"Meh" with "disliked" tendencies. It was better than I was expecting, but that's not saying a lot. The direction the playtest takes is what'll decide it for me, I guess.

    ZEITGEIST A Pixie in Zeitgeist?

I could roll with it. A Pixie Air Elementalist flavored as a sylph sounds pretty sweet, and has been bouncing around in my head for a while.

    Adapting Advntage/Disadvantage

Looking at Oath, it's worded such that there is no benefit from the oath in either situation - advantage or disadvantage. It could be reworded to take those into account, though. Perhaps they're cumulative, dicewise? Frex, Advantage + OoE = roll 3 dice, take highest, while Disadvantage + OoE =...

    Adapting Advntage/Disadvantage

I could see modifying several conditions to use advantage/disadvantage. Color me interested. I'd be careful re: the Avenger, though. The way Oath of Enmity is written, right now CA helps, but it wouldn't do anything if it granted advantage. And how would that interact with disadvantage?

    ZEITGEIST A Pixie in Zeitgeist?

That's a touch more extreme than I read; For one thing, by my reading Risur doesn't really have the "trophy wife" deal that the other nations do, considering their closer ties to fey powers. I always considered that to primarily be a Danoran thing. As to the Terrorists bit; that's not tied to...

How do you handle food and drink?

It's only really worth tracking if the PCs get put into a survival situation, such as wandering through the desert. The Dark Sun Campaign Guide describes an abstract resource - supply days, I think they're called? - that represents how much food, water, and other necessary supplies the party...

    latest gaming purchase ?

Last Game Purchase: Several Arkham Horror expansions Last Gaming-Related Purchase: Some plastic hardware boxes and a plastic trading card box (for Arkham Horror) Next Gaming Purchase: DDI re-up, or maybe a few more AH expansions (I'm addicted) or Small World or Dungeon Survival Handbook...

D&D Next Chat Transcript (Mike Mearls & Jeremy Crawford)

That bolded bit worries me just a bit, because in my experience this could lead to trap options. I mean, in 4e, if you want a mundane warrior but /don't/ want to be a defender, you don't choose a fighter - you choose a rogue or a barbarian or a ranger or a warlord or some other class that /is/...

Where do you meet to play?

We play at my home or at the FLGS; I like my house because of access to materials, but more often, recently, it's at the shop because I've started gaming with people who are either not very close friends or are wildly different from me in age, who I'd be uncomfortable letting into my home.

    Every Edition is a Failure

Fact of the matter is, though, if Paizo were beholden to Hasbro like Wizards is, things wouldn't seem so peachy keen. Paizo's standards for success (and, for that matter, Wizard's) are probably way different than Hasbro's. As a result, if Wizards says 4e isn't selling enough, and Paizo says PF...

    Every Edition is a Failure

Yes, you can; Essentials was not a revision, it was a supplement. It didn't change how the game worked; it only provided alternate character creation, much like Psionics did the year earlier. Not so with 3.5; that actually changed rules, as opposed to just providing new material to use with the...

    D&D 5E (2014) 5e's big problem - Balancing "Being D&D" versus "Being Not D&D"

With the 2e ==> 3e / 3e ==> 4e argument, it seems to me that people are comparing apples and oranges; On the 2e ==> 3e side, the argument is "It feels more alike", whereas the 3e ==> 4e side is saying "The rules are more alike". Completely separate arguments. Personally, I disagree with the 2e...
