List OSR products for 1e AD&D

The reviews Matthew did on some of the Advanced Adventure modules are worth checking out, too.

4E Burnout - What to do next?

My suggestions: TSR D&D -- If you go this route, I recommend playing the real deal (or a clone that is as close as possible to the real deal). Basic Roleplaying -- There is a lot of cool stuff going on in the BRP world, at the moment. The Legend PDF is only $1.00, right now, as are a some...

List OSR products for 1e AD&D

I'll second grodog on Curse of the Witch Head, Red Mausoleum, Spire of Iron and Crystal, and the magazines. I haven't read or used the other two modules he lists, so I can't speak to those. I'd add Pod Caverns of the Sinister Shroom as another stand-out.

    D&D 4E What's the point of playing 4e now?

If you're playing 4e because you enjoy the game, then play on. If you're playing 4e because it's the shiny newness, or because you're only interested in playing games with a constant flow of shiny newness then wallow in despair.

WotC Seeks Unity with a New Edition

I stepped off the carousel some time ago. As it goes around, again, I'll keep an eye on it. I doubt I'll be offered anything worth stepping back onto it, but we'll see.

What Games are Best for Campaigning? Which are Not?

Campaign can have quite a few different meanings. One of my favorites is the kind of campaign where the setting goes beyond being just a backdrop for the story or action and instead becomes part of the game. That is, players can play the setting. It has resources that are finite and can be...

    Your Current Game?

Last game I ran was Mongoose Runequest II (a fantasy-historical scenario set in Hellenistic-era Anatolia). Last game I played in was a Swords & Wizardry module playtest. I'm due to play in a Labyrinth Lord game, tomorrow. And my main game group is wanting to play, again, now that the holidays...

    Battlefields versus the 5' dungeon.

The only time I use a battle mat or grid at all is for combat, and even then it's only some of the time. We never it use it like a game-board during exploration and such. (I run OD&D and AD&D, if that matters.) During exploration and non-combat play, the players usually arrange their...

Can getting what you want ruin your fun?

That's how I used to describe my disillusionment with 3e, actually. "It gave me everything I ever wanted in D&D...but it wasn't what I wanted."

    If Hasbro Pulls the Plug....

I would love to know some actual statistics on entry into the hobby. That is, what percentage of gamers were "stranger newbies" that bought an RPG without influence from a friend (e.g., sitting in on a game, watching a game, recommendation/word-of-mouth, et cetera). I'm sure they exist, but...

Hooking the Players onto AD&D1 Published Adventure Plot Hooks

If the module is being used as a one-shot, separate from the regular campaign, then we'd probably cut to the chase and get into it. I'd probably read the introduction (some of those are too damn long, but I usually still read them). If the module is being used as part of the existing campaign...

    Which game you played last?

That's, by far, the coolest answer so far. :) Last RPG I played was Mongoose Runequest II.

    If Hasbro Pulls the Plug....

This. How many of you would stop gaming entirely just because D&D stopped being published in a shiny new edition? How many of you would stop inviting friends to play? I think that if WotC ceased publishing D&D, the demand for RPGs would stay about the same, and another game or games would...

    If Hasbro Pulls the Plug....

As far as I'm concerned, the plug has been pulled on D&D for years, now. The cessation of new products under the D&D trademark wouldn't affect my gaming at all.

    Going Retro

Original D&D was so incredibly unplayable and lame that it sunk like a stone, which is why no one has even *heard* of a game called "Dungeons & Dragons." </sarcasm> As is obvious to anyone reading it, original D&D wasn't the most elegantly edited and presented game out there, and perhaps even...

What SuperHero RPG do you play ?

I don't currently play one, but I have played Champions, Superworld, MSH, and Mutants & Masterminds. Which means my favorite superhero game is probably Villains & Vigilantes...

    Going Retro

The THAC0 vs. BAB argument always amazes me. To me, it's the same thing, just like subtraction is merely the inverse of addition. I find the main difference to be the size of the numbers, rather than the operation being used. The editions that use THAC0 tend to use smaller numbers than the...

Do you want/are you ready for a D&D 5th edition?

I went with no, but it's not that I'm against or not ready for a 5e, it's just that I don't care. I don't expect a new edition of D&D from WotC to mesh with my tastes.
