D&D 4E Revised 4E Wizard Class with Freeform Spellcasting System

Check out his webpage, he has ylthe fighter overhaul up too. The idea is that all classes would be fundamentally different and more flexible. As to who would need supporting characters, have you forgotten how squishy wizards are? Wizards need non-wizards to keep them from getting killed. Doing a...

D&D 4E Revised 4E Wizard Class with Freeform Spellcasting System

Let me be the first to nominate this as the 5e/New Horizons spell-casting system for wizards and mages (at least).

D&D 4E Revised 4E Wizard Class with Freeform Spellcasting System

True. To me it felt like a realistic representation of powers scaling up, which is present in the revised system because as you level you get more dice (and therefore options to add cool effects to the spells.) I'll concede that point. infact, as I was writing the narrative, I felt like I was...

D&D 4E Revised 4E Wizard Class with Freeform Spellcasting System

@Upper_Krust , I like that itemized lists of benefits. I hadn't realized some of them with the first reading. Yes. Well... depends on the player. I would expect the very nature of the system to foster creativity. However, some might still get stuck in a rut, find one thing they like and use it...

D&D 4E Revised 4E Wizard Class with Freeform Spellcasting System

Let me start by saying "I like it!" I'm not sure that was accomplished here, if anything, this system seems more complicated than spells that are laid out for the player to immediately choose from. Although I could have a different idea of what "rule bloat" is than you do. DEFINETLY...

    Dungeon graffiti

As DM, drop the party a journal from a former adventurer. Inside, on one of the pages in messy writing: The circle of drawing be trapp'd The cross bears its maker a fyne reward Try an angle if ye' be daring! So a circle gets them hurt, an X get's them loot, a triangle gets them....??? It's...

    Granting companion animals, pets, familiars

Good point, I editted the title of the thread to be more accurate, and will be updating the referenced post as well.

    Granting companion animals, pets, familiars

So a system being streamlined is a reason to hate it? Really? :hmm: Note that I never said that a pet/familiar/companion animal should be a rigid set of rules. Look at that list above. I said creative use of the underling should be encouraged and rewarded. Sounds boring, right? The only thing...

Monk or Assassin, Which do you Dislike?

This is a leading question, if not leading and double-barreled, but at least you provided an option for me that allowed me to answer it. I believe a player should be able to play monk or assassin in any campaign, even if it is medieval-Europe centri/tolkien based/etc, ON THE BASIS that they...

    Granting companion animals, pets, familiars

So, main points that have emerged from this thread: For granted familiars, pets, and companion animals, make sure they don't destroy the action economy of the game. If handed out easily, encourage and reward use of pets, companion animals, and familiars mostly for flavor and RP purposes, not...

    Granting companion animals, pets, familiars

I'm strongly against this approach. It has been my experience as a DM and player that one Character sheet is enough to handle; giving the player another complicated character to manage slows down the game and over-complicates things. I instead prefer the 4e approach where the pet is simplified...

    Cool stunts you've seen

In a 3.5 game, I was playing a half-elf rogue named Vincent the Roach, of chaotic neutral alignment. I've always interpretted this alignment as "I have no ties to any creed, I do what I like when I like, etc." We had arrived in a vast Dwarven City and were asked to venture into the tomb below...

    Granting companion animals, pets, familiars

Having recently read up on them, I can confirm that familiars also do not break the action economy. In fact, to even begin receiving its active bonuses/abilities, the pc has to use a minor action. after that, you use move actions to move your familiar, etc.

    Kruthik Familiar

So the Warlock in the campaign I DM is hatching a kruthik (small reptilian spidery guy) and wants to replace her wisp familiar with it. Since it is a physical being, I thought this would make a good skill challenge by requiring a short ritual to bind it's soul to her own (I think the warlock...

    Granting companion animals, pets, familiars

Ringlerun, familiars/pets/etc have never functioned differently in any editions I've played either. And I have no problem with them being used creatively. However, I have often seen them become a problem when a player spends double the time of other players in battle because he/she is...

    Granting companion animals, pets, familiars

I drew up a stat block for the familiar using the familiars in 4e's Arcane Power as guidlines (Didn't mention is before, but I'm DMing 4e) Attached is the block with the back side below for anyone that is interested. Feedback and variant powers are welcome advice, it's almost of a copy of the...

    Granting companion animals, pets, familiars

The difference between items and pc's having a minions of sorts to me has been that the latter is sentient. The players expects it to be able to accomplish some portion of what their character can, which requires tight holds on the reins, so to speak. I fully agree that granting a companion is...

D&D 4E New to 4E, New to DM, New to EN

Echoing what others have said, I'd recommend walking before running as well. However, I've noticed that one of the most powerful tools to use when you arrive at the storyline part of your game is to develope a story or series of events that will unfold with or without your player's/pcs...
