Is 4th edition getting soft? - edited for friendly content :)

Oh, come on. That's not true and you know it.

What is the chance of that death being the result of a single die roll?

The difference is, the gambler chose to make that bet. Players don't choose to have to save or die - it's something that's forced on them over the course of mid-high level D&D play. It's not the same thing at all. So? There only needs to be one, you know. Well, two - one arcane and one divine...

Heroes Season [Volume] 2 (#27)---10/15/07-'The Kindness of Strangers'

I guess we'll have to agree to disagree on this. I don't find it believable at all. And I still think it's all being done just to create unnecessary drama in Claire's relationship with her father, but I guess we'll see on that.

Heroes Season [Volume] 2 (#27)---10/15/07-'The Kindness of Strangers'

Did you watch the same episode I did? What sent Claire out of the room in a state of tears was that she was terrified that West was going to tell the whole class that he'd seen her regenerate her toe after she'd cut it off, thereby putting her entire family in danger and requiring them to uproot...

Heroes Season [Volume] 2 (#27)---10/15/07-'The Kindness of Strangers'

You surmise incorrectly. I know that people who are mercurial enough to turn around that fast on someone exist, but they are a minority, and Claire's characterization on the show thus far has not made me believe that she's one of them. Rather, this whole storyline feels very much like the...

Scott Rouse blog - Rogue ability

I can agree with this to a certain extent, but taking damage so that weaker characters don't have to has always been one of the fighter's main roles, in every edition of D&D.

And stalk them, don't forget. West is really starting to get on my nerves. I don't think I've hated a character this much since Spike on Buffy the Vampire Slayer (I mean, a character I was supposed to like). Hmm, come to think of it, he was a stalker, too. I'm sensing a trend here....

Heroes Season [Volume] 2 (#27)---10/15/07-'The Kindness of Strangers'

No, it's not, and I don't have to be or have ever been a teenage girl in love to know that. Again, West upset Claire badly enough that she had to flee a classroom in tears, and yet, just an hour or so later, she's making out with him. No one turns around that quickly on someone, teenage girl or no.

Is 4th edition getting soft? - edited for friendly content :)

Haven't we had this conversation before? The short answer is because not every option that someone likes can be included in the game, and the designers have to pick somewhere to draw the line.

Scott Rouse blog - Rogue ability

Did you actually read his post? He didn't make your point, he refuted your point. The word "grind" was used in a completely different context here than it's usually used in WoW.

Both of those things are entirely possible in a game without save-or-die.

What on Earth is absurd about an 8th level party encountering a CR 8 monster?

I think BECMI did a good job with changing playstyles as the PCs gained levels. The basic dungeon adventure was something you pretty much only did for the first few levels, then the focus moved to wilderness exploration, then to ruling your own kingdom, then to extraplanar stuff and the quest...

But this isn't a solution, for a couple of reasons. First, as has been pointed out, at high levels, mooks start throwing save-or-die effects. Like I said, when encountered by a 17th level party, a 13th level cleric is supposed to be a mook who they can take down with ease. But that mook can...

So the DM is a jackass for using an appropriately CR-ed creature straight out of the Monster Manual? Doesn't that raise a big warning flag that there's a problem with the system? So the solution is for the DM to metagame and make enemies with save-or-die attacks less effective? Because there's...

Heroes Season [Volume] 2 (#27)---10/15/07-'The Kindness of Strangers'

It's not about Claire lying to her dad to see a boy - it's about Claire trusting said boy, who she's known all of one week, and who upset her badly enough to make her flee a classroom in tears, more than her father. Especially when, back in season 1, she found out all the extraordinary risks her...

Heroes Season [Volume] 2 (#27)---10/15/07-'The Kindness of Strangers'

Why didn't they just recast her? If any role on the show could be recast, it'd be hers. Just explain it by saying she likes to change appearances from time to time. Easily believable for a character with the power of illusion, since we had no idea what she really looked like. And count me as...

Oh, for god's sake. Removing save-or-dies from the game does not mean that PCs can't ever die. Can we dispense with this ridiculous argument already?

    D&D 4E Rant on the 4E "Presentation"

Oh, I know. I'm not saying that there's no such thing as legitimate complaint. But really, how much information could you reasonably expect to have by this point? They're still playtesting. If they give us the details of some new mechanic they've created, only to have the playtesting reveal that...
