    D&D 4E 4E Devils vs. Demons article

Asmodeus and Mephistopheles are WotC IP? Really? I'll have to visit the WotC offices sometime. I'd like to borrow their time machine.

    D&D 4E 4E Devils vs. Demons article

And there's no reason to prefer 3E D&D to any of those games, either. It's all down to individual taste. 4E D&D will stand or fall on its own merits, just as 3E did - how much similarity it bears to previous editions will have little to no impact on it. Neither does the planar cosmology.

    D&D 4E 4E Devils vs. Demons article

Then what was D&D back in the 70s and early 80s, when it had no history?

    Gravity

QFT. I can suspend my disbelief about lots of things in a heroic fantasy game, but not this.

    Gravity

That's why I said a non-superficial wound. Someone who takes a serious slash to the leg isn't going to be moving as quickly as he was before. Someone whose sword arm gets wounded isn't going to be able to hit as hard or as fast as he could before. Someone who takes a hit to their shield arm...

    Gravity

Because in real life, all other things being equal, someone who's taken a non-superficial wound doesn't fight as well as someone who's unhurt.

Says you. I don't like to have things decided after the first round of combat (which is why I also don't like save-or-dies). That's not tense, that's annoying and anticlimactic. And "death spiral" fights turn things into even more of a "he who wins initiative wins" situation than D&D currently...

    Gravity

But the high-level fighter isn't taking the sword attack that would kill you or me. He's dodging it or parrying it and only taking a little scratch instead of a stab wound to the gut. That's why, after getting hit for 10 damage (or whatever), he still has tons of hit points left, while most...

    Gravity

Quite good? Any fighter who can consistently survive 70 damage in a shot can probably also make a DC 15 Fort save in his sleep.

    Gravity

Yeah. It models real life combat well, but IMO it's not fun for a game.

    Gravity

I don't like this either, but I think it's a necessary evil to avoid the "death spiral."

    Gravity

There's a difference between "sometimes" and "every time."

    Gravity

I would have no problem with a character having a (very remote) chance to survive a freakishly long fall once. But under the rules of D&D, a high level fighter can take that freakishly long fall as many times as he wants and it will never, ever kill him. So long as he gets healed between each...

D&D 4E Is 4E winning you or losing you?

The designers have said that, while some elements of 4E may be mechanically similar to parts of ToB, they will not have the same flavor.

D&D 4E Is 4E winning you or losing you?

I like most of what I've heard about 4E so far (with a couple of notable exceptions). However, as they say, the devil's in the details, so I won't be making any purchasing decisions until I see the finished product. If they can pull off everything they're talking about, I think 4E will be a...

    Elemental Planes Killed

You answered the wrong question. The question is not "why have an elemental plane of fire if its only a plausible adventuring place for 15th or higher level characters?" It's "why have an elemental plane of fire if no one ever uses it in their game?" Kurotowa said it best: As it stands now (at...

    Elemental Planes Killed

Or mid- and even high-level characters, if we're talking about the planes of fire and earth. That's the question that lots of people are asking right now.

    Elemental Planes Killed

Fly lasts 1 minute per level and affects one creature. It's not a serious option for a 5th level party if they want to get anywhere. Air Walk (4th level) is better, at 10 minutes per level, but it only works effectively if there's no wind, which is hardly a safe assumption on the plane of air...

    Elemental Planes Killed

This is incorrect. You can actually divide DMs into three groups: Those who don't set adventures on the elemental plane of fire, those who do, and those who would set adventures on the elemental plane of fire if only it were a more interesting place to set adventures (and if only it were a place...

    Elemental Planes Killed

The only reason that most DMs don't have a problem with the elemental planes is because they ignore them completely.
