D&D 5E (2014) What can D&D [next] learn from other games?

I like them (and proposed switching to True20 for this an other reasons) but if so many of the complains about 4e (and 3e before it) were the slaying of sacred cows, then I don't see it going in as a core mechanic.

    D&D 5E (2014) I think 5E needs less innovation.

5e's biggest obstacle isn't the future - it's the past.

    D&D 5E (2014) Rituals in 5e

The problem is that rituals as introduced in 4e specify a certain game/campaign style that likely would not be appreciated by a sizable portion of the intended audience.

Are people underestimating the desire to "come home"?

Exclusively then, and fair enough. If it feels like 0e or 4e then I'll skip it. Which goes to prove what a lot of people are saying, in a way - 5e should be system-agnostic. It should feel like all prior editions and also, like none of them.

WotC Seeks Unity with a New Edition

People (like Kenzer) can publish 4e stuff under Fair Use copyright laws and bet that they have top-notch lawyers (I believe David Kenzer is a lawyer) and reasonably believe they can publish compatible material without violating those laws and thus subjecting themselves to costly and lengthy...

How do you feel about the future of D&D after the official announcements?

Taking the above as a sample of the same repeated expression... I wonder if at some point, someone at WotC stood up and said, "Look, with 4e we let incompetent marketing people and business managers run things and look what happened. Give us a chance to fix things, gamers to gamers." Ah well...

How do you feel about the future of D&D after the official announcements?

Here's how I see it - add up Positive and Neutral. Why? Because I think a substantial number of the people voting neutral are 3.x and earlier players, who've abandoned WotC/D&D at this point, so prior to this they'd have had a Negative opinion. Thus, becoming Neutral is a positive. And for...

Ryan dancey hints that DnD will become a board game....

I've seen no such official announcement one way or the other.

How important is multi-classing, and why?

I could go along with this.

D&D 5E (2014) What can D&D [next] learn from other games?

You need to retain more than the number of players who 4e left behind, or else obtain near-impossible levels of new players to compensate. Ideally you have a healthy mix of the two.

WotC Seeks Unity with a New Edition

And you have the empirical evidence that proves beyond all doubt that a VTT is absolutely required for a successful 4e/5e? Great, please provide it, otherwise you're merely providing an opinion and guess what? That is debatable. Post hoc fallacy.

People who do not frequent wizards.com

This. They can build the hype all they want with the testing and previews and whatnot, but if it's merely 4.5 when it launches, then it'll flop, because at the end of the day, people know what they want - not what they're told they want.

Are people underestimating the desire to "come home"?

Do you mean inclusively or do you mean exclusively?

    D&D 5E (2014) 5E: A Danger of Fragmentation?

A gaming comparison I can think of would perhaps be the Squad Leader / Advanced Squad Leader game, which is a WW2 wargame. You have a very basic core set of rules with tons of optional rules and you pick the rules you want for a given scenario ala cart (or buffet style or cherry picking if you...

Are people underestimating the desire to "come home"?

I think they've started to do the things necessary to get people to even consider "coming home" but the question is if they can succeed. To get the people who left back (thinking mainly of the 3.x folks) 1. Mea Culpa for the way 4e marketing was handled. 2. Admission that they made 4e in such...

    D&D 5E (2014) 5E: A Danger of Fragmentation?

Given where we are in the process of 5e creation, I think it's extremely premature to make these assertions, after all - 5e could be such a universal method of gaming that does appeal to fans of all generations that they use it to supplant or enhance their existing version, which would serve as...

How important is multi-classing, and why?

Personally, I think if there are classes, there should be some form of easy multi-classing.

How do you feel about the future of D&D after the official announcements?

My feelings are fairly well summed up by Henry. Short term this means WotC and D&D is back on the front page and let's face it, the evidence seems to suggest that WotC couldn't afford to do nothing, so it's positive in that regard. On the downside, is it too late? 2nd edition lasted for 11...
