For a More Old-School Experience, Don't Use Background and Theme

How can you be sure? After all, don't people "use up their luck", bemoan rolling a 20 when just playing around because they've "used up the luck of the dice", don't people have "luck streaks", and so on. Or to use your position, how can you say that Slayer doesn't represent the fighter being...

For a More Old-School Experience, Don't Use Background and Theme

This for me, coupled with what HP represent - not merely physical damage capacity, but luck, ability to "roll with the blow" to lessen the effect, mental toughness in staying focused during adversity, etc. So an attack misses - how much of a stretch is it to think that some of the target's...

    The Playtest Agreement

Speaking solely for myself as a lapsed D&D player turned Pathfinder player... I sort of think part of it is a matter of faith - let me explain. I didn't really care for 4e (but I hasten to add that I know that people do enjoy it and they are fully intelligent, rational people who are not under...

    Intoxicated

Yes, but HP isn't solely a reflection of one's ability to withstand physical damage - it's a throwback to the old days where it was a reflection of luck, favor of the gods, ability to avoid damage, etc. I have no problem with it precisely because HP =/= Physical. HP = Physical + Spirtual +...

    The Playtest Agreement

A couple of things strike me. 1) I am not my brother's keeper. Under no circumstances would I even bother asking if the people in my local group signed up for the playtest and since the usual standard is for a couple of people to have read rules and a couple to just wing it even with games...

    are Lions size Large?

I think the best suggestion was earlier: make male lions large and female lions medium. That could make for a fun encounter with Dire versions... I'd probably male and female tigers large.

Monte has left the building:How do you feel about the direction of the game?

Monte leaving gives me pause. However, not as much as if the upcoming open playtest is riddled with problems. And if the open playtest points the way to a very good game system, then I won't care.

    are Lions size Large?

From my understanding, rhinos prefer to bite/stomp and bulls will charge and then try to bite/kick/stomp. No idea about moose, but I imagine it'd be the same - batting enemies around cartoon style would be a huge expenditure of energy/calories, when maybe an initial charge followed by...

    are Lions size Large?

And? That description applies to dang near every large creature. In the case of lions or tigers, large size also helps represent the potential area they threaten - again I point you to how large creatures are handled in 3.5 vs. 3.0.

    are Lions size Large?

Personally, I'd toss lions and tigers in the Large category without batting an eye. Why? Size in D&D is comprised of more than just height/length/weight - it's also a matter of combat prowess/projection. Yeah, so what if a typical lion is "only" 450lbs? Who cares of a tiger is "only" 7' if...

Bluffside for PF--would anyone be interested?

I'd certainly be interested because I still have Bluffside in my campaign world. The more vital question tho, is Hal still pantsless?

D&D 5E (2014) Jonathan Tweet & Rob Heinsoo: Making their own 5th Edition?

"...beginning sometime in the spring, we will begin open playtesting. Keen or not to keen and staggered initiative.

Ah, I see where you were going with that and yeah, given the right circumstances, could be fun to pull off. Of course, I wonder at the actual logistics of it, but if you can do it, I'd love to hear about it.

Keen or not to keen and staggered initiative.

Except that even in your first example, there'd be an initiative heirarchy and in the second, not sure what'd be gained by moving forward and then moving back apart from burning calories - when you can have a readied action to trigger a "free" ranged attack. Beyond that, Charge sorta makes it...

Keen or not to keen and staggered initiative.

Note that if a character does a Ready Action and it triggers later on in the round, then their initiative changes for the rest of the combat to when the triggered action happens (barring other initiative changes, such as another Ready Action, Delay, or going Unconscious).
