3.5 1st level adventure for 10 yr old DM

I didn't spot it on the list, but then I have old eyes. There were some great 3.5 adventures towards the end of the Dungeon print run. "Whispering Cairn", I think it's Dungeon 124? Erik Mona did a smash up job with this adventure, it's a heck of a lot of fun. Has a very old school feel to...

My 4 year old son's first adventure

Yep, you read that right, my 4 year old boy. He's been pestering me for about a year to play Dungeons & Dragons with me, so with the Red Box, I saw an opportunity to teach him a little about the game. So we started through the solo adventure, I would convert some of the larger words into...

Just how popular was DnD? Did kids really play it during lunch? (red box nostalgia)

We didn't play during lunch, but we did play just about every single night during the summer for several summers in a row, and weekends during the school year.... by weekends I mean from Friday night sleepover till Sunday morning sometime. This was in 1978/9 or thereabouts.

Essentials - First Impressions of the product line - I feel claustrophobic!

Rules compendium is now the only book I carry with my to gamedays. Before, I would take my PHB and a binder with the errata. I have never felt the need to bring all the power books, monster books, etc, because I have everything I need with DDI on thin sheets of paper. So I save a few pounds...

    Your favorite pickup game?

Haven't had to go to it yet, but Castle Ravenloft will very likely fall into this category. Others we have used: Bang! -- you can inject roleplay into it, or not... or just drink some beer and shoot people. Plus the directions are in Italian which is super fun. Magic:The Gathering is still...

The Dungeon of the Ghost Tower -- continuing the Red Box

Makes me think of a house rule. If a magic item is above your level, you need to make skill checks to use it properly. Arcana in this case, or perhaps religion. Failure could create an uncontrolled zombie. :)

The Dungeon of the Ghost Tower -- continuing the Red Box

I thought it was interesting too, particularly that it's a rare level 10 item found in a level 2 adventure.

I'm pissed off with Wizards of the Coast

I wonder about saturation. There are a bunch of splats out, essentials, adventures, tiles, gamma world, two new board games... tons of stuff that has come out recently or is about to come out. I don't know about anyone else but I don't have enough money to buy ALL that stuff right now, need to...

What other Essentialized classes do you want?

I like exactly what is in the essentials currently, and really want nothing more. If I want more, I have 4E to play with.

    Roll....initiative!!

Initiative is on the Combat Pad (Paizo sells them). Conditions on players is usually in the form of an index card where I scribble what it is and hand it to them. When the condition is gone they hand it back to me. Conditions on bad guys is up to the players to remind me... they track their...

    Looking for introductory material

You could also take a look at the Living Forgotten Realms modules, those are all designed to run in about 4 hours. One of them is even located within the DMG itself, "Kobold Hall".

    Fantasy Sound Effects Sites

Heh, I saw the topic and thought "My mouth, and sometimes other body parts". It's one of those things I like to do... the sound of a sloppy, wet, but at the same time crunch that the otyugh makes when it's consuming a human femur is not to be missed at my table... or orcs that sound about as...

D&D Encounters Season 3 - Keep on the Borderlands

Yep, in fact it could be fun it the players rotated the duties, each taking a chapter. That way everyone gets a chance behind the screen (my favorite place).

Red Box Tokens - Better than I expected

I was pretty skeptical of the tokens that came in the red box. They looked flimsy from the pictures, and heck even picking up the full sheet and feeling it flop in my hand a bit didn't comfort me. -BUT- I popped the pogs out so that I could show my son how to play tonight, and noticed that...

D&D Encounters Season 3 - Keep on the Borderlands

Here is where I'll add a "Yes, but...", it is 20 weeks long, broken into 5 chapters (1 per month). Each chapter is 4 sessions long and a complete mini-story. So, one could potentially drop in as a player for 4 weeks and get the complete adventure feeling. For DMs, yes, it's a big time...

rules question - taking something from an adjacent willing ally

Yep, you are right. I rather assumed that Player A would have been holding it, but yes, you are correct. -Or- Player A hands a note to the DM that reads "I ready a standard action to pull the item away from Player B when they go to grab it. Can I include a free action to make a snappy...

rules question - taking something from an adjacent willing ally

How about a minor to work around that house rule then. Player A drops item as a free action, player B picks it up as a minor. Making it a standard would be acceptable if it's a plate of jello in my opinion.
