    Red Box: Some Constructive Criticism

"You can't use any of it"? Didn't you learn the core mechanics of 4E gameplay and have an adventure in the process (without anyone showing you how to)? When the old boxed sets were out, my brother and I played it a few times before we moved on to AD&D and never opened that old boxed set...

I believe that it is indeed a direct sequel to that story. There are some references to let you tie it to that.

D&D "Red Box" Game Day this Saturday (11th September)

I ran a session of this at our meetup last weekend as a warm up for the big event (since two of the players were DMs for the game day it equated to a slot zero). Players still grumbled about pregens... they always do. But this is an essentials game, and you really can't make an essentials...

    The Troll Test

You enter a cave filled with gasoline and thirty trolls. The cave is the size of a sheet of a4 paper. You have a flint and steel in your inventory. Seriously, that is a challenge for another day for me. Edit: I am pretty sure the OP is serious here guys. I'll work on this, I just can't...

    Human-only campaign

What I did for Hommlet 4E was I let the players take whatever race they wanted and then I reskinned them to humans. So if you were a goliath, you are big and tall. If you were a bugbear, you were a hairy person. Seemed to work out just fine.

    Red Box: Some Constructive Criticism

I'd say it would be terrible, sneaky and underhanded if they gave you the box but inside you only found tokens, maps, a set of dice and a sheet of paper directing you to sign up for DDI content in order to play... but wow I don't agree with the words selected. It's an excellent value in my...

    Red Box: Some Constructive Criticism

I consider a few things when looking at this set: I really like that it requires nobody to instruct you as to how to play, it takes you through an adventure that you can read by yourself to get oriented to how to play the game and afterwards you have a viable character. The (low) price of...

    The Pinnacle of your Collection

My most treasured gaming thing isn't tangible. It's all the laughs, moments of shock and terror, excitement, gabbing about girls or orcs, talking about crappy movies while drinking toxic soda pop and potato chips... it's the memories of 30+ years of gaming. That's what I value most.

    Best "Dungeon Crawl" Board Game(s)?

I have Talisman, and it's fun to play with my family when we get together, but it takes a LONG time to play. This is my fall back game when we don't have enough players for D&D. I have played House on Haunted Hill and found it enjoyable, but the rules were a little confusing and it ran a...

What does your ENWorld name mean?

Mine goes back to when Everquest first came out. I wanted to play a bard in the game, but was struggling to find a name that would be fitting of a bard. As it would happen, as I was creating my character... Seinfeld was on, and it was the Festivus episode. That name has pretty well stuck as a...

    Which Basic?

I feel old. I can remember we had the blue covered book, and the AD&D DMG... nothing else to start with. I have no idea the year now, but pretty sure it was the Holmes edition.

Red Box Gameday adventure Sept 11

I am reading the adventure, and coupled with the pregens it has a very classic feel to it. The poster map is black and white and looks like it's almost hand drawn. The pregens are printed on orange half sheets. Mechanically, this is looking way easier to teach than classic 4e. Adventure plot...

How is PvP in 4th Ed?

At the end of D&D Encounters Season 1, two tables faced off. One made entirely of drow, the other entirely of non-drow. It was a lot of fun to play, and very dependent on how well the teamwork and synergy of the party was. With 12 players it took a bit of time but it was entertaining to do...

    Unboxing the DM's Kit

$40 is expensive if you already have a DMG. But for new players, that's a pretty good deal in my opinion. The tokens seemed to be the same thin ones like in the red box though. I am a sucker for poster maps, wish they would sell those separately.
