    D&D 5E (2014) This Game is Deadly

They are? Where? I do know that level 1 of 4e more or less resembles level 3 in 5e, but I haven't seen what you are saying here...

    I don't want to be a druid/cleric, I want to be a fighter.

The Fighter is pretty good in my opinion, especially if the Cleric/Druid/Wizard in the party uses party buffs intead of self-buffs. In other words, I would play a Fighter if I wanted to play a melee guy. I like having a flexible character though, so I would probably end up with some weird ass...

    D&D 5E (2014) This Game is Deadly

I would say that the Starter set is "normal adventuring", and it starts at level 1. If you want to play a less deadly 5e game, you should probably start at level 2+, but I wouldn't say starting at level 3 is the norm. I will check with my group to see what they prefer, I don't actually mind...

D&D 5E (2014) Comment on the negative article by John Dodd

Yeah, he nowhere mentioned that the D&D Starter set can be ordered* for 13$, while the Pathfinder starter set costs 29$, more than twice the price. So, mentioning that the D&D set feels cheap, without mentioning that it IS cheap sounds pretty biased... *Both prices from amazon.com

D&D 5E (2014) Guiding Bolt too good for a level 1 cleric spell?

The thing with Guiding Bolt is that it's a single-target attack with a to-hit roll. In other words, even though the average damage is pretty good, the variance per fight is very big. When you miss, it does nothing and if you needed the damage, you are in trouble. If you didn't need the damage...

D&D 5E (2014) Legends and Lore July 28: Keeping it Classy

Just let your Fighter have Dex as his main stat instead of Str. Add the background you want for the skills/proficiencies and you have a lighly armored Thug stabbing away with his Rapier, adding dex to both AC, to-hit, damage, Dex-saving throw and initiative. He is also very decent with ranged...

D&D 5E (2014) So when do you think the PDFs will go on sale? (Speculation)

Yeah, and people have already scanned and torrented the starter set, so the idea that not selling the pdfs will reduce piracy doesn't really doesn't make sense. I do believe that they are creating the app you are suggesting, but it isn't ready yet. I think that's a bad strategy, releasing the...

D&D 5E (2014) Will we see a DMG option to cap hitpoints?

I don't think we will see a DMG option to cap hitpoints, because as noted several times here, the damage would continue growing until just about every monster one-shots the PCs. I really hope they release a variation of the E6 that's popular in 3e. I am guessing it would be a E10 though...

    D&D 5E (2014) What Classes in PHB?

The Druid just has the powers that easily* deal damage, not control. The standard at-will, Magic stones does 3x 1d4+5 damage, or 3d4+15 or 18-27 damage, and usually he has the three targets. AoE Blasters are underrated. What is better control than giving the "dead" condition? ;) Btw, note that...

    D&D 5E (2014) What Classes in PHB?

I got tired of a bit slow combat in 4e and when my players made their characters for the current campaign, I asked them to put most of the power in offense, not defense. I am running Reavers of Harkenworld and the encounters that are equal in level are mostly over in 3 rounds. I had one...

    D&D 5E (2014) Have you played 5E yet?

I am waiting for the Starter Set (And the PHB/DMG/MM), because I like to run a premade module to see how the game designers feel the game should be run. I find it easier to learn by using an example than to just read the rules.

    D&D 5E (2014) PH(B) Tavern Brawler Feat

I do think that mixing in stat boosts into feats is a bit boring. It kind of feels like they couldn't think of a good enough feat, so they propped it up with a stat boost.

    D&D 5E (2014) Flame Skull

Hell corridor: High up on the walls, you see skull-decorated tourches burning. As you walk down the corridor, four small pebble-sized fiery spheres shoots from them and explodes in balls of fire. Roll a Dex(save) check for half of 4x8d6 damage. Btw, those skulls sure have a hefty amount of...

    D&D 5E (2014) E6 and 5e (Things I've noticed)

Mearls has already mentioned there is a "break point" at level 11. That's the reason he gives for the xp table "break" as the game goes into a new tier.

Looking for setting: Dragon lair in underground city.

Yeah, I read the first post and was going... what was the name of that city? So yeah, Xak Tsaroth would be my choice as well. Three times mentioned is the charm? :p

    D&D 5E (2014) E6 and 5e (Things I've noticed)

I thought about it and 5e really does remind me of E6. I do think the scaling damage muddies the water a bit though. Meteor Swarm does 2x20d6 damage in four 20' radius areas at a 1 mile range for instance. If I was going to do something like E6 for 5e, it would probably be E10. That matches...

D&D 5E (2014) Lost Mine of Phandelver - comments and complaints after read-through (spoilers)

Sound advice! In 4e I often use encounters that are out of the PC's league. When I do, they come up with something to avoid a TPK. It's probably a bit harder in 5e, since combat lasts fewer rounds and you therefore have less time to see death coming. I think that any adventure should have one...

D&D 5E (2014) So it looks as if the mountain dwarf will still make the best overall wizard.

Wouldn't it be better to pick a Human, take the +1 to two stats and a feat option, and select the moderatly armored feat for +1 con and medium armor proficiency? Then you could with the default array of 15, 14, 13 start out with 15+1 = 16 int and 14+1+1 = 16 con? +1 to hit and damage at low...

D&D 5E (2014) Lost Mine of Phandelver - comments and complaints after read-through (spoilers)

I don't find giving this kind of information meta-gamey at all. The characters probably know of the reputation of dragons as murder-machines, while the players might think it's just a game and everything is level-appropriate. I don't know how the dragon is presented in the module, but the main...
