    Improving "slowed"

I'm not sure if the idea in general is a good one or not, but I had a thought about how else you could achieve a similar effect: Slowed: The affected creature treats all terrain as difficult. Cheers, Roger

    Multi-property magic items

One of the things about 4E that took me a while to wrap my head around was the idea that stuff is in the game to be used, and not just in the last %25 of the level range. Artifacts are part of the game. Characters can start finding them around level 6 or so. This is a pretty radical change...

Rare magic and godlike sorcerers — settings?

The Hyperborea setting of Conan tends towards this sort of thing. The world of Fafhrd and Grey Mouser also has its share of mysterious, godlike magic-users. Well, two of them, mostly. Cheers, Roger

    Adventurer's Vault 2 Playtest

I think I know to what purpose I'm going to bend the Orb mechanics. They should work great for big monsters with Engulf attacks. Cheers, Roger

    Adventurer's Vault 2 Playtest

Do you remember how many times that wight hit you with its claw attack? If the only way to decrease your stack of healing surges was to expend them, I'd agree with you entirely. It's not, so I don't. Cheers, Roger

    Adventurer's Vault 2 Playtest

Some neat stuff here. Tattoos: Most of these look okay. I'm a bit worried about the bookkeeping overhead on the 'healing surges expended' ones, but I guess I can trust a player who buys one of these to keep on top of that. Orbs: Neat idea. I can see myself swiping this sort of power for a...

Off the Farm (Forked Thread: Telling a story with 4th Edition)

Fair enough; thanks for sharing some insight into your process. Sounds like your players will be in for a good time with your next planned game. Cheers, Roger

Wizards, Armour and the Collective Consciousness

Merlin, in the Excalibur movie, wears a steel hat.

Off the Farm (Forked Thread: Telling a story with 4th Edition)

Thanks for providing examples -- this helps considerably. I think they could each benefit from their own analysis: * Folks can teleport: The only 1st-level characters likely to teleport are swordmages and eladrin. As swordmages are peculiar to the Forgotten Realms, I think we can put them...

Off the Farm (Forked Thread: Telling a story with 4th Edition)

This doesn't seem like anything that would require house rules. Guards who can kill the PCs without breaking a sweat? No problem. Goblins who can kill the PCs in one blow? Easy as pie. You seem to be saying "1st level 4E characters are powerful because they are powerful" which isn't quite as...

Off the Farm (Forked Thread: Telling a story with 4th Edition)

Forked from: Telling a story with 4th Edition I don't think I agree with you, but I'm not sure exactly what the issue is. Can you provide an example or two of what you mean? Cheers, Roger

    Playtest: The Druid (merged)

I think I'm going to run off and create a warforged druid right now. He shall be named Optimus Prime. Cheers, Roger

What ways are there to prevent teleportation?

No problem, Piratecat. I might even be able to swing a playtest of your adventure for you, if you're interested. Forbiddance won't help but it looks like Magic Circle (level 5 ritual) might. Cheers, Roger

What ways are there to prevent teleportation?

    * Ghost Bridle, lvl 4 magic item, AV pg 123 * Body, No Body, lvl 16 Utility power, FRPG pg 44 * Wraithform Blast, lvl 20 attack power, FRPG pg 49 * Bodak Skulk, lvl 16 * Phantom Warrior (Ghost), lvl 4 (and all other Ghosts) * Githyanki Gish, lvl 15 * Rakshasa Assasin, lvl 17 * Shadow Snake...

    Beastmasters & Mounts

On page 46 of the DMG, the second paragraph under "Encounters with PC Mounts" (starting "You can allow the PCs and the creatures they ride to get their own sets of actions...") describes how to balance this approach. Cheers, Roger

What ways are there to prevent teleportation?

I'd be more worried about Phasing, and to a lesser extent, Burrow. Assuming I'd worry about such things at all, which I probably wouldn't. Cheers, Roger

    Too Hard?

Sure there is. A monster might chase you, or run away. A hazard won't. The tree has no some sort of ranged attack, but we don't know anything about it. All the party needs to do is stand back and fill it with arrows, while occasionally crushing a minion or two.

    Too Hard?

The tree isn't a monster. It's a hazard. Cheers, Roger

    Players as nobles and landowners.

Okay, that gives us a base value of about 35 thousand. My hunch is that a reasonable rate of return on something like that would fit in right around the #10 treasure parcel for the party level. On a really good year they might get #9; in a bad year, they might only get half of #10 or even...

    THis monster balanced?

Looks close enough to the Bloodweb Spider Swarm (level 7 soldier) for me to call it plausible. Cheers, Roger
