    One Thousand Pre-Generated Basic Characters

Based on some good suggestions, I've updated my document containing the thousand pre-generated Basic characters to add several indices. You could find a random character who is: * a dwarf * a hill dwarf * a hill dwarf fighter * a hill dwarf fighter specializing in Great Weapon …and so forth...

    One Thousand Pre-Generated Basic Characters

Someone asked me what the most common stat array from rolling best-3-of-4d6 is; turns out it is: 15,14,13,12,11,10. Which is 30 points under the standard point buy. Cheers, Roger

    One Thousand Pre-Generated Basic Characters

Who rolls up a thousand Basic characters? This guy. Go ahead, take a look. Could be used for: - Actual pre-gens: get your players off to a quick start by rolling d1000 for a character. They'll want to roll low. - Hirelings and assorted NPCs: not a bad place to start if the party wants to...

    D&D 5E (2014) Basic already surprising us.

I'm not entirely sure how this rule from Backgrounds is supposed to be applied: "If a character would gain the same proficiency from two different sources, he or she can choose a different proficiency of the same kind (skill or tool) instead." The most charitable reading would seem to imply...

D&D 5E (2014) Are we back to Feat taxes?

Back in my day, 10' of reach was worth something. What exactly its worth is, well, that remains a matter of some debate. Cheers, Roger

    D&D 5E (2014) The Limping Rogue

This is a little obscure, but consider this section from Backgrounds and Skills: If your character already has training in a skill and gains training in that skill again (for example, a skill granted by both the character’s class and background), you instead choose a different skill in which...

Radical Houserule: No in-combat healing for anyone

Yeah, I could go for that. Thanks for the comments, everyone. Gives me some things to chew over. Cheers, Roger

Radical Houserule: No in-combat healing for anyone

Thinking about taking a more radical approach to healing: No one gets to heal anything while in-combat. Out of combat, sure, go nuts, stuff your guts back in. Haven't playtested this one yet though. So there might be some horrible problem with it that I just haven't thought of yet...

    D&D 5E (2014) Pet Peeve: Weapon Weights

Only if the average Str-10 guy stops getting to carry around a hundred pounds on his back all day and night without any problem. Cheers, Roger

    D&D 5E (2014) Great news on Skills

Any love for 'must be trained' usages? I was thinking it might be a good generalized requirement for generalized toolkits -- thieves' tools and healers' kits being the obvious ones, but I think it could be extended. Cheers, Roger

    Strongest racial animosity in D&D?

I'll go with xag-ya and xeg-yi. They explode on contact! Cheers, Roger

    D&D 5E (2014) Great news on Skills

Hmmm. I think I like this in theory, but I'm not sure how often it'll come up in practice. Let's see... Find and Remove Traps to assist in a Dex check to dodge a triggered trap, maybe, I can see coming up. Spot with Intelligence sort of gives us Search back. Survival with Constitution I can...

    D&D 5E (2014) Frustrated with Next

Sending in a mob of 40 giant centipedes might change your mind. Cheers, Roger

    D&D 5E (2014) Too many knowledge skills.

I sure did. I would not have guessed that the answer to "Hey can I remember which one of King Olbon's bastards led the Burun's Farm Rebellion in '28?" would be "Sure go ahead and roll Heraldic Lore" before reading the skill description. Cheers, Roger

D&D 5E (2014) Garments of Critter Muscle and the Giantish Conundrum

Maybe also check out the various Potions of Giant Strength. Cheers, Roger

D&D 5E (2014) Make Your Most Broken Character

There's a couple of +1 shields in the Caves of Chaos, so I would say they're legit. Also he can dodge for +4 to AC, and stand behind 3/4 cover for +5 to AC. Cheers, Roger

    D&D 5E (2014) Too many knowledge skills.

Hmmm. I think it's mostly fine; there might be a few tweaks here and there between playtest and final production. Do we need them all? Probably not. Does it hurt anything to have a whole bunch defined? Not to my perception it doesn't. If I had a player who said "Alright look I know my guy...

D&D 5E (2014) Trail and error item identifying

I agree. Entirely. But, as far as I'm concerned, this thread is pretty much "Hey the PCs are doing something I don't approve of; how can I, the DM, make it so they don't?" It may well be that I've misunderstood the OP and that isn't actually the question he's trying to ask; I'd be happy to...

D&D 5E (2014) Trail and error item identifying

Only if they try to identify it using the method that we apparently really don't want them to use: trial-and-error. Absolutely every other solution at their disposal to identify the cursed ring leads to no Gotcha at all. I guess this could lead to the PCs deciding to never trust anyone again...

D&D 5E (2014) Trail and error item identifying

Exactly! If a DM wants to discourage a certain behaviour, all he has to do is provide some disincentive. If he wants to discourage the identification of items by trial-and-error, for some reason, all he has to do is throw in a cursed magical item. Cheers, Roger
