    Monster Fluff

I like to go back to the source. Fairy tales (the Russian ones are fun), the Eddas, Golden Bough, Greek myths, etc etc. Finding out the original tarrasque got beat down by some chick and her garter belt is worth the price of admission. Cheers, Roger

Where did my options go? - The New Paradigm

I think this thread runs perilously close to the ban on edition wars threads (http://www.enworld.org/showthread.php?t=230454), but I'm not a moderator. Cheers, Roger

Cloak of Invisibility: Best item in the game?

It doesn't seem particularly more powerful than the Hide in Plain Sight encounter ability (rogue utility 16) or the Hide from the Light ability (rogue utility 22). Cheers, Roger

    D&D 4E 4E Challenge: Design a TPK

Thread necro time! Now that we (well, some of us) have the books, what's our best 500 xp TPK encounter? For me, I'll have to go with 3 Warhorses, coming in at 150xp each. They have this ability: * Trample (Standard At-Will): The warhorse can move up to its speed and enter enemies' spaces...

Monster Design: Damage Expressions and Multiple Attacks

Let's check out some extant monsters with double attacking powers in your general sort of level range: Bar-Lgura: Level 8 Brute, 1d8+6 damage, or 2d8+6 if bloodied. Young Black Dragon: Level 4 Solo Lurker, 1d4+3 damage. Young Green Dragon: Level 5 Solo Skirmisher, 1d6+5 damage. Young White...

    Skill Training vs. Multiclassing

In addition to the issue of only being able to multiclass once, there's also ability score prerequisites for Soldier of the Faith, unlike Skill Training. I don't think Soldier of the Faith opens up the paladin paragon paths either, but I'm not entirely sure on that. Cheers, Roger

    Players making stuff for themselves.

A skill challenge like this might consist of 4 to 8 rolls. A similarly-scaled combat might consist of 12 to 18 rolls. I'm not convinced the combat option is the "short way" for the players. If they're especially ingenious or enterprising, giving them a bonus on the challenge is certainly...

    Economics & Small Urban Settings

It's probably on the high side for serfs (Commoners), yes. For everyone else, a fair amount of that wealth probably consists of the real estate itself (which is not really portable), buildings (also not all that portable), and other such things. For some people it may represent the value of...

    Players making stuff for themselves.

Sure! Of course, searching around for the raw materials for poisons and/or magic items is possibly a lengthy process... the best way to model it might be with a skill challenge. If they succeed, they get some XP and some treasure -- treasure in the form of an item discount, in this case...

Dhampir - New Race for review

Looks pretty good; they're a bit stronger than Longtooth Shifters as written. I might be inclined to drop Resilient from them. Cheers, Roger

    Cleric - Guardian of Faith

What makes you think that? EDIT: Oh -- probably pg 59 of the PHB, under the section on 'Conjurations.' Whoops. So, yeah, apparently by RAW, they can't move through it. As a DM I would tend to have the monsters conclude this would be a good time to fall back, run away, and engage the threat...

Lessons from Game Day [Spoiler Free]

So I DM'ed the Game Day adventure, and learned some useful things about 4E in the process. 1. The players should definitely be making a Monster Knowledge Check when entering an encounter. There's basically 4 ways to figure out what a monster will do when you enter combat with it: A. "Oh...

    Multiple Magic Weapon Properties

I suspect the way to build that sort of item with the current RAW is to make it an artifact (which are not in the PHB, but rather the DMG.) Cheers, Roger

Is 4E coherent, incoherent or abashed? (RPG theory stuff inside)

Sure it's strange -- but don't blame D&D for that strangeness. You're the one that created that skill challenge. If you don't like the success and failure results, change them. If all, or even most, of the example skill challenges in the game books were set up like this, then I could...
