Ah ever the outlier. I did run 4e, a lot. The DMG did not have the magic items, the PHB did, so they had to put something in there. Yes, it starts with "how to be a DM". Followed by "running the game". You can debate how well it worked. (Jame Wyatt did the book and tried to do a DM advice...

I don’t think there has ever been a DMG that really tells you how to DM. So that’s something. But the most important bit was for the MM, and committing to changing, and I assume mostly boosting, the numbers to actually hit the monster CR.

Perkins notes that by having more cards, DMs can pick and choose to make their own decks. This reduces predictability and I guess campaign blowing up….or makes it easier.

Is that his point?? Or my point? 1D&D can certainly replace 2014 books if it is good enough. Early signs are unclear. But just making something compatible, as 2e was with 1e, does not by itself ensure success.

Sure. The issue is how many sticks. With 2e and 4e, it was a lot that stuck. Fortunately, they are not calling this 6e, so that may solve the problem.

I managed to read the whole OP! I feel proud. There are certainly similarities. There has also been initial waves of anger with One. Those may fade. But there is the real danger. 2024 D&D will just be ignored by a lot of current gamers. Many people I know who staid with 1e weren't really mad...
