Peregrine's Nest: What Does a Line Developer Do?

Having done individual book development freelance for some indie companies, I really enjoyed it. Although I do a lot of writing, I'm definitely more in love with the project management process, the editing and wrangling; writing is a distant second to all that, to me. I'd love to have an...

    Shadowdark Blacklight, a Shadowdark supplement

Very late to this thread, but just wanted to pop in and let folks know that I picked up Blacklight and absolutely love it. Here's a mini-review: I'd been poking around for a game to run an SCP-style game of Mobile Task Force members (mix of military and scientists) investigating a few...

D&D 5E (2014) Kobold Press' Tome of Beasts Joins D&D Beyond

Absolutely. I can't get over the "your renting it, you don't own it" nature of these things, though. DDB died for me when WOTC pulled the OGL stuff, and because of that, I'm hesitant to pull the trigger on anything Demiplane, even though they are by all measures that I can tell a better group...

RPG Crowdfunding News – The Tomb of Gyzaengaxx, Gary Gygax's World Builders Archive, and more

I'm in a similar place. Especially after prepping some of the OAR adventures by Goodman and my I-don't-know-what-number-th time prepping a Curse of Strahd campaign, I'm absolutely burnt out on long prose in adventures. And especially a big hear-hear on sample pages. Don't give me the...

D&D 5E (2014) Kobold Press' Tome of Beasts Joins D&D Beyond

Could be, though in this industry, there's always a price tag, and if anyone can match it, that would be WOTC.

Running Mongoose Publishing: An Interview with Matthew Sprange

Agreed with the above. Matt's ability to shift gears into running a company that's great for its employees is an inspiring thing to watch. If they are ever hiring remote, sign me up!

D&D 5E (2014) Kobold Press' Tome of Beasts Joins D&D Beyond

Good point! I should have said something more to the effect of them making DDB the dominant sales channel, as opposed to the only one. But yes, they are clearly monetizing D&D across a great many channels, which is good for the industry at large. Unrelated to that quote: I suspect DMsGuild...

D&D 5E (2014) Kobold Press' Tome of Beasts Joins D&D Beyond

The flip side is that these 3PP companies still get to exist and sell outside of DDB, as well, so in that way, it doesn't harm access to those things. But I agree that skepticism over this specific subject is important. As long as WOTC can continue to sweep their worst practices under the rug...

Steamforged Games Making the Tales of the Valiant Starter Set

Exactly. SFG are absolutely stellar with putting together great minis (and other doodads), and packaging them incredibly well. I'm curious if they are indeed going with minis for this, or possibly going the route of pawns or something more flexible like D&D did with the static-cling stickers on...

Shadow of the Weird Wizard Is Finally Here!

As one of the "haters," I'm really happy to see this. Very responsive to feedback, everything moving quickly and in the right direction. No surprise, really. The folks behind it know what they are doing!

Kickstarter HEROIC The Role-Playing Game is Now on Backerkit - An Updated Take on FASERIP

@Thomas Shey Confirmed that there are (at least) three methods of character creation! The Backerkit campaign is live (as of yesterday) and is already over 50% funded, so dive in if you're interested: HEROIC the Role Playing Game

Kickstarter HEROIC The Role-Playing Game is Now on Backerkit - An Updated Take on FASERIP

Sorry for the late reply! For the best source on all of this, look up ZEG Media and contact them (Andrew Collas) for details. From what I do know, they are integrating everything in ASH (even the unwritten stuff) plus their own, even more heavily playtested work, so I expect to see a few...

Shadow of the Weird Wizard Is Finally Here!

Keep in mind, I'm interested in Shadow of the Demon Lord but have not yet purchased, and was waiting on Weird Wizard to figure out which one to check out more thoroughly. (Based on this thread, sounds like Demon Lord will win out!) But I might be able to at least partially answer your question...

Shadow of the Weird Wizard Is Finally Here!

The preview could certainly do with being a lot longer. This (and Shadow of the Demon Lord before it) is a game that I've had a lot of interest in, but at the same time, I extremely picky about what I'm throwing my money at, so it'd be nice to see how more of the rules sections are laid out.

Grading the Cortex Plus and Cortex Prime System

Pretty sure that was to specifically model the Event format of the game, rather than to model the comic universe itself. Knowing so many games (published events as well as homebrew tables) would feature a mixed bag of Marvel characters rather than groups that focus along team affiliation lines...

Grading the Cortex Plus and Cortex Prime System

A more comprehensive version of that can now be found as a site at: cortexhacks.timbannock.com This has been solved with the release of Tales of Xadia, Keystone Fantasy, and most especially The Arcanist's Toolkit. You can find releases of that caliber here: cortexprime.rileyrouth.com

D&D Movie/TV Joe Manganiello: Dragonlance TV Show No Longer In Development

It's telling that things like The Dragon Prince and a Critical Role animated series are hugely popular and get greenlit for multiple seasons at a time while D&D: HAT was seen as a disappointment and Dragonlance isn't considered to have the cultural cache to be greenlit in the first place. I...

D&D General Mike Schley, WotC Cartographer, discovers a treasure trove of official 3.5 and 4e maps!

Considering his status, he's probably one of the few cartographers who could have either (1) kept certain rights to his works from the outset, or (2) worked out a deal with Wizards to do so recently in his career. He was pretty much THE map guy for 2-3 decades now. Just conjecture on my part...

D&D General No, Hasbro Is Not Selling D&D

Exactly. You have to remember that every single one of these people either is or is trying to make a living off of their videos (or other social content, which can include articles and blogs, but who goes to those anymore?), and therefore they have to get more clicks. It's that simple. If they...

D&D 5E (2014) Do you ever roll for monster HPs in 5E?

When I have the encounter prepped (9 outta 10 times), yes, I roll for HP. I also add B/X-style morale. I have definitely seen some especially good or bad rolls change how a combat goes. The most blatant examples are when I ran LMoP back in the day (not rolling for HP, not using Morale, not...
